Sofia Coppola considered raffling off a pickleball game with her handsome leading man Jacob Elordi in order to boost the budget of their upcoming indie film Priscilla after some of the financing fell through.
‘We built a pickleball court on our shooting stage and everyone started to play at lunch, and we had a big tournament at the end,’ the 52-year-old filmmaker explained in the October edition of WSJ. Magazine – hitting stands this Saturday.
‘[Jacob] can play pickleball. Our budget was always strained, low budget, and I was like, “I wonder if I could raffle off a pickleball game with Jacob to raise money to get one more day of shooting.”‘
Sofia didn’t end up doing an auction, but she said the Australian 26-year-old ‘was a good sport. He indulged me, even though he’s not an enthusiast. I think he associates it with, like, Malibu moms.’
Jacob – best known as Nate Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria – took on the heavy task of playing Elvis Presley one year after the Oscar-nominated portrayal from Austin Butler (who happens to be dating his ex Kaia Gerber).

And while Baz Luhrmann had an $85M budget for his Elvis biopic, Coppola had to make her critically-acclaimed adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me in six weeks with ‘less than $20M’ and none of the music rights.
Priscilla scored a seven-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 9, and Cailee Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for her performance as the only woman whoever wed and had The King’s child.
Controversially, Priscilla Beaulieu was only 14 when Elvis, then a 24-year-old US Army private, first began wooing her while stationed at the 3rd Armored Division in Germany in 1959.
Elsewhere in the same interview, the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola revealed the best piece of advice she ever received was from Oscar winner Anjelica Huston, who told her at age 14 that she ‘would grow into my nose.’
‘My 13-year-old daughter [Cosima] thinks her nose is too big,’ Sofia revealed.
‘And I was like, “Oh, my God, I remember; you’re going to grow into your nose.” That helped me get through my awkward phase.’
Back in March, Coppola’s ‘rebellious’ 16-year-old daughter Romy went viral on TikTok for complaining about being grounded for using her father’s credit card to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland so she could have dinner with a friend.
Cosima and Romy are the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s two children with second husband – Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars – whom she wed 12 years ago after collaborating on the soundtrack to her first film, The Virgin Suicides, in 1998.
