In his own update, David wrote: ‘An inspirational afternoon at Royal Holloway London watching the next generation of PhDs collect their hard-earned degrees.

‘I revelled at the diversity and compassion of their dissertations. It filled me with hope.

‘I was also grateful to receive my Doctor of Literature honoris causa, for my 30+ years work with Elton John AIDS Foundation.’

He continued: ‘I accepted the degree with humility, because the lifesaving work being recognised has never been the work of one person.

‘I share this honour with the all activists, clinicians, scientists, volunteers, educators, public servants, donors – and above all – the people living with HIV, whose courage, determination and leadership have driven progress for decades.

‘Thank you to everyone at Royal Holloway for honouring me and welcoming me so warmly to your community.

‘Thank you also to the entire team at the Elton John AIDS Foundation – especially my indefatigable husband Elton.’
