Sian Welby has spoken out on the ‘mad’ timing when she found out she had landed her dream job on This Morning whilst pregnant.
The TV and radio star, who also presents the Capital Radio Breakfast Show, welcomed her daughter Ruby in June 2024, just months after ITV bosses trusted her to co-host This Morning, where she had previously fronted competitions and other items.
Sian, 39, has revealed that she felt she had to hide her pregnancy from ITV bosses because she wanted to focus on the job – her dream role since she was a child, explaining: ‘I purposely didn’t say anything because I thought I just want this week to be about whether or not I could do the job. I didn’t want it to be “Sian’s pregnant”.’
She insisted that when she did eventually reveal her pregnancy to both ITV heads and her bosses at Capital, everyone was supportive but ‘in my own head I’m an inconvenience.’
‘You get a new job and you think “I can’t tell them because now I’m I’m a totally inconvenience”. I’m going to let everyone down,’ she confessed on the Mum’s The Word podcast with Georgia Jones and Kelsey Parker.
‘I’m a double wage because they’re paying somebody to cover while I’m off and all this kind of stuff.’

‘And you think, God, the world needs to get a grip a little bit because there’s not enough respect. Procreating is literally the thing we’re here to do. And yet I still think there is stigma and it is treated like, “Oh, well, this is not good for the workplace.”‘Â
Sian eventually told her bosses after her 20 week scan but was reluctant to take focus away from her new role.Â
‘I purposely didn’t say anything because I thought I just want this week to be about whether or not I could do the job and if I did a good job. I didn’t want it to be “Sian’s pregnant”.’Â Â Â Â Â
‘I thought this is sod’s law that all my jobs are coming to an absolute head here, we got a brand new breakfast show.’
After hiding her pregnancy for weeks, Sian also felt the pressure to return to work after giving birth.
The presenter, 39, revealed to the Daily Mail how she returned to work just three months after giving birth as the ‘breadwinner’ of the family – and her fear of the roles she worked 15 years for disappearing. Â
Sian wasn’t prepared to take the risk of potentially losing roles she worked hard for, or being left behind by the constantly changing industry that many dream of working in.
She explained: ‘I’m very realistic that I can’t be sure what would happen if I took a full year off. I don’t know many people in this industry that would take that much time out. You have to be very secure within your job and your role.

‘I have bills to pay. I have to provide for my family, and I had built this up, it was 15 years in the making, some of these jobs are finally there.
‘People might know me now from This Morning or Capital. Those jobs took a long time to get, and I wasn’t ready to potentially throw them away or let them, or the momentum slow down. I was also really loving the fact it was finally getting going.’
Sian has admitted the ‘mad’ timing of her pregnancy has changed her attitude and work/life balance for the better.
‘It’s got harder but it’s given me boundaries. For years I was just a yes girl,’ she explained.Â
Sian returned to her role on Capital after three months, followed by her showbiz news slot on This Morning a few months later.
Her fiancé Jake Beckett, a producer who she met whilst working in radio, took Shared Parental Leave when she went back, with Sian praising their parenting dynamic.Â
Jake proposed to Sian during a romantic getaway in 2023 but as they ‘tag team’ parenting their 17-month-old daughter in between their schedules, Sian has revealed she can’t consider planning her big day right now.

She recently told the Daily Mail: ‘The fiancé takes the back burner bless him, because both of you as a couple are trying to find time for the baby. And then you realise when are we gonna do a date night and bless us we have tried.
‘We hit 8pm and we’re closed out, we’re like falling asleep on the Tube home and you realise how hard it is.
‘Everyone says those first two years they’re ill, they don’t sleep, you’re trying to adjust. You get through one phase and then they start another one.
‘I think in general I’m in the trenches and so me and Jake have to just keep checking in with each other. You know, take it in turns to apologise.’Â
