Shrek 2 could be re-released in cinemas across the UK in 2024 to mark the film’s 20-year anniversary.
It comes following the release of trailers by the Government of Alberta in Canada for the months of January and February.
The much-loved Dreamworks film’s trailer was scheduled for a review by the province’s film body on Thursday.
The announcement triggered speculation the picture could reappear in cinemas across Britain later this year.
Originally released in 2004, the animated film documents Shrek and Fiona’s stay in the kingdom of the latter’s parents, Far Far Away.

But as her father King Harold (voiced by John Cleese) does not like Shrek, he enlists the help of the Fairy Godmother (voiced by Jennifer Saunders) to keep him away from his daughter.

The film was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows).

In January last year, Eddie Murphy said that if the opportunity ever presented itself to reprise his role as Donkey from Shrek, he would ‘absolutely do it.’
After the Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots: The Last Wish was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, Eddie said: ‘I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek; I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,’ in an interview with Etalk.
The star also revealed that he found his character of Donkey to be more deserving of his own spin-off movie in comparison to Puss in Boots.
