Seven News weatherman Tony Auden  opens up about his mental health as he addresses on-air panic attack

Tony Auden is opening up about his mental health after experiencing a terrifying panic attack last year while presenting a news bulletin.

The Channel Seven Queensland meteorologist told Q Weekend on Friday that the episode came out of nowhere during a 6pm program in October 2024.

Dubbing the moment an ‘out-of-body experience’, Tony told the Courier Mail magazine that he was internally freaking out while on-air, a feeling that filled him with fear and nausea.

‘It started in the stomach and then I just felt adrenaline release and felt my heart rate go up, head get fuzzy, sweats and a little bit out of body just trying to keep it going,’ he revealed.

However, despite the overwhelming feelings that were taking control of his body, Tony remained calm and collected on-screen.

‘I did something between a cough and a swallow near the end, which is probably the only thing that some people noticed,’ he confessed.

The live moment shone a light on the weatherman’s long history with anxiety and prompted him to question his future with the network.

‘As soon as I got off air, it was immediate relief, but then this ongoing anxiety of, “Can I do this again? Can I open up to people?”‘

Tony isn’t the first news presenter to experience panic attacks while on-air.

ABC News Breakfast weather presenter Nate Byrne was forced to halt his report in August last year after suffering an anxiety attack.

Byrne cut short his broadcast just before 6.30am, telling viewers ‘I’m going to need to stop for a second’.

Voice quivering, he told viewers: ‘Some of you may know that I occasionally get affected by some panic attacks, and actually that’s happening right now.

‘Lisa (Millar), maybe I could hand back to you.’

Co-host Millar quickly took over the broadcast while Byrne recovered off camera.

Byrne has spoken openly about his struggles with anxiety – publishing an article in 2022 where he documented his experiences of on-air panic attacks.

The weather presenter was later welcomed back to the show and apologised for stepping out.

‘Sorry if I gave anybody a bit of a scare,’ he said.

Rowland responded in jest that he was only scared that he might have had to step in and report the weather.

Byrne has previously described his experience of a live TV panic attack as leaving him ‘gasping for breath’.

‘As I stood there under the studio lights, talking to people having their morning coffee and wiping sleep from their eyes, my heart was racing.

‘I was gasping for breath and sweat was pouring out of every pore as my brain screamed “RUN!”.

‘But I was standing in one of my favourite places, doing the thing I love most.’

Byrne said that as soon as the camera was off him, he dropped his on-air demeanour and ‘doubled over, trying to catch my breath, light headed and confused about what was happening.’

He has since been working with a psychologist to learn and action coping skills so that he can continue to do his job.
