Selma Blair on Losing Roles to Holmes & Connelly Amid MS Battle

Selma Blair is looking back at the early days of her Hollywood career.

The 53-year-old actress — who is planning a comeback — reflected on previously losing roles to Katie Holmes and Jennifer Connelly.

She told News.com about starting out in show business, ‘Everything was almost. Almost.’

Selma almost landed the role of Joey Potter in Dawson’s Creek, but the role went to Katie Holmes.

And she told News.com.au about the 2000 film Requiem for a Dream, ‘It was between me and the lovely and wonderful Jennifer [Connolly], who got it. [Director Darren Aronofsky] wrote me a letter. I had said, “I’d give my left arm to be in your movie!”

‘And he’s like, “Well, you don’t have to give your left arm! The next one I do…” And that was like 30 years ago.’

Looking on the positive side, Selma said about working in films like Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde, ‘I was happy at the time to get [the parts] I got. I didn’t have a huge amount of ambition, I was happy to be in a supporting role.’

She added, ‘And now I am a little greedier.’

The mother-of-one added about her parts in the memorable films: ‘It was really fun to be part of something that feels like such Americana.’

Following her Multiple Sclerosis, diagnosis in 2018, the movie star said she’s been relapse-free for a ‘couple of years’ and is ready to return to acting.

She treated the auto-immune disease with chemotherapy and stem cell treatment.

‘That, of course, means the world to me that I’m not, at this moment, accumulating more damage in my brain. I have also made a lot of strides with the vibe of neuroplasticity,’ she shared.

Selma noted, ‘I’m very, very lucky. Everyone’s experience with MS is different. I think I do have a certain place [to speak publicly]. My big mouth likes to see what I can do about stigma.’

Fans will see the star in three upcoming projects: war drama Stay Forte, There There and Silent, a supernatural thriller.

‘There are some [roles] coming up that I never saw coming. I am excited about getting back into movies,’ she gushed.

While attending Elle’s Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles earlier this week, Selma told People: ‘I’m getting my stamina back all the time and traveling around and doing collaborations.’

The Detroit native said her ‘joy is always gonna be from’ her 14-year-old son Arthur Saint Bleick, and joked: ‘I wish he felt the same way.’

She told the outlet in September that she’s ‘really in awe of how brave’ Arthur has been: ‘He takes great care of me, too, when at times I need it.’

Selma welcomed her only child during her two-year relationship with ex-boyfriend Jason Bleick, which ended in 2012.
