Kevin Williamson - the creator of the franchise and the writer of the original 1996 film - returned to write and direct this instalment and filled it with subtle nods and references to the previous films.

1. The Macher House

It won't come as big surprise to Scream fans to hear that the infamous Macher house makes another appearance in the seventh film

It won't come as big surprise to Scream fans to hear that the infamous Macher house makes another appearance in the seventh film.

The house - the home of original killer Stu Macher - played host to the final killing spree in the first film which culminated with Sidney killing Stu and her boyfriend Billy Loomos.

It has now been turned into an 'experience' for fans of the Stab films - the fictional horrror franchise based on the Ghostface killings.

Scream 7 opens with Stab fan Scott taking his girlfriend Madison to the Macher house which contains multiple references to the first and fifth films - when the house became the home of Ghostface killer Amber Freeman.

2. Tatum

Sidney named her eldest daughter after her best friend from the 1996 film, played by Rose McGowan.

Tatum Riley was the younger sister of Woodsboro police officer Dewey Riley and was very protective of Sidney. She memorably met her end when Ghostface crushed her neck in a garage door.

Sidney explains in detail to her daughter why she named her after her late friend - and it pulls at the heartstrings.

3. The boyfriend in the window

After the opening kill happens - the story cuts to Sidney's daughter alone in her bedroom where her boyfriend sneaks in through the window - mirroring the original film

After the opening kill happens - the story immediately cuts to Sidney's daughter alone in her bedroom.

Seconds later, her boyfriend appears at her window and climbs inside before they kiss on the bed.

The scene is a clear nod to the original film when viewers first met Sidney in her room before her boyfriend Billy Loomis snuck in her window.

In the seventh movie, Tatum's boyfriend Ben Brown is played by Australian actor Sam Rechner, best known for appearing in the Steven Spielberg  film The Fabelmans.

4. The leather jacket

Early on in the film, Tatum arrived downstairs wearing a brown leather jacket as she prepares to leave for school - the same one Sidney wore in Scream 2

Early on in the film, Tatum arrived downstairs wearing a brown leather jacket as she prepares to leave for school.

Sidney's face falls when she sees it - and fans should know why because it's the same jacket she wore during the finale of Scream 2.

Tatum explains she found the jacket in the attic and decided to wear it - but Sidney asks her to take it off to avoid the memories of her college years coming back.

5. Ghostface on stage

Another nod to Scream 2 comes in the form of Ghostface appearing on stage.

Scream 2 fans will remember Sidney seeing Ghostface while she was rehearsing her role as Cassandra in the Greek tragedy Agamemnon.

Now, Sidney's daughter Tatum has a small role in a high school play, mirroring her own mother's love of theatre in college.

Her friends also have roles in the play and some of them come face to face with Ghostface for the first time when he crashes rehearsals.

6. Tori Spelling's blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance

Eagle-eyed fans will see Tori appear in Scream 7 too in a brief moment when Sidney and Gale Weathers begin their investigation to unmask the latest Ghostface (pictured in Scream 2)

Although she only appears briefly in Scream 2, Tori Spelling's relationship with the Scream franchise has been long lasting.

She is first mentioned in the original film when Sidney jokes if Hollywood ever decides to make a film of her life, they will cast the Beverly Hills 90210 actress to play her.

This prediction comes true in the second film when Tori plays Sidney in the Stab films. She is mentioned again in the third film as having reprised her role in Sab 2 and again in the fifth film when Tara (Jenna Ortega) is asked horror movie trivia by Ghostdace on the phone.

Eagle-eyed fans will see Tori appear in Scream 7 too in a brief moment when Sidney and Gale Weathers begin their investigation to unmask the latest Ghostface.

7. The curfew is back

Following the murders of Casey Becker and Steven Orth in the original film, a city-wide curfew is announced in Woodsboro, with residents expected to be in their homes by 9pm.

This of course is broken when the town's teens arrive to Stu Macher's house for a party at the end of the film.

Pine Grove finds itself under the same curfew when the latest round of murders kick off, with the authorities taking no chances giving Sidney's history.

8. Stu is back - and he's not the only one

It was announced many months ago that Matthew Lillard who played Stu Macher would be returning for the seventh film - one of many cameos fans will see in Scream 7

It was announced many months ago that Matthew Lillard who played Stu Macher would be returning for the seventh film.

It was unknown how his return would be handled given his character was very much dead at the end of the first film - with Sidney electrocuting him by throwing a TV on his head.

It was also announced that Scott Foley - who memorably played Sidney's brother Roman, the killer in Scream 3 - would also appear in the seventh film.

They aren't the only actors from previous films fans can look forward to seeing as a few more also make cameo appearances in the seventhqual, ensuring the nostalgia factor is kept high for fans.

9. 'You shoot him in the head'

It's not too much of a spoiler to reveal the 'you must shoot Ghostface in the head' is still very much in place for Scream 7

As any self-respecting Scream fan known, there are certain rules you must abide by in order to survive a horror movie.

Each film introduced new rules, but the most memorable were those introduced in the first: You must not have sex, you must not drink or do drunks and you must never say, 'I'll be right back'.

Another rule that has become ironclad to the series is that, in order to kill Ghostface, it's not enough to shoot him in the chest - you must shoot him in the head.

It's not too much of a spoiler to reveal this rule is still very much in place for Scream 7, with Sidney even coaching her daughter over the phone how to deliver the final blow when Tatum comes to face to face with the killer.
