Samantha Armytage’s Shocking Exit from Channel Seven

Samantha Armytage announced her departure from Channel Seven after 21 years on Sunday morning.

The Farmer Wants A Wife host told The Daily Telegraph, she made a decision to quit the network with the support of her husband, Richard Lavender, and her departure is ‘about me wanting to feel fulfilled.’

‘I had to sit with myself here and ask, “What does my next five to 10 years look like?”‘ she told the publication.

‘I’m 47, so it was a bit of a stocktake. I’m still productive. I want to make good TV.’

Armytage has reportedly declined a new deal with Seven after her current contract expires in October.

She said her departure was ‘sad and bittersweet’ but she felt her time had come and she was excited about her future.

Armytage will still appear at the upcoming Logies, with her show Farmer Wants A Wife nominated for Best Structured Reality Program, but she will not return to host the next series.

Angus Ross, Group Managing Director of Seven Television, released a statement on Sunday morning, confirming Natalie Gruzlewski will return as host when the new season premieres in 2025.

‘After 21 years, Samantha Armytage has decided to leave the Seven Network in October this year. We fully understand and support her decision,’ it read.

‘Sam has made a remarkable contribution to Seven over more than two decades, from 7NEWS and Sunrise to, more recently, Farmer Wants A Wife.’

‘Her genuine affection for the country lifestyle she’s grown up with and enjoys to this day has shone through her three seasons with the TV WEEK Logie Award-nominated series. It’s been a pleasure watching Sam share her pride of these communities with Australia as our incredible farmer love stories have unfolded.’

‘We wish Sam – and her farmer – every happiness and success for the future.’

Armytage joined Seven back in 2003, landing her first major presenting role on Seven News Sydney in 2004.

She was co-host of the popular breakfast show Sunrise alongside Kochie from 2013 to 2021, and was replaced by newsreader Natalie Barr when she resigned from the role.

Last year, she took over hosting duties on Farmer Wants A Wife from Gruzlewski, who remained on the show as a presenter.

Her departure from Seven comes after it was reported that famous faces are on the chopping block and some of the network’s biggest stars are facing pay cuts to keep their jobs.

Respected newsreader Mark Ferguson is in danger, and was given ‘six weeks of forced annual leave’, the Daily Telegraph reported last month.

It’s understood the network will consider replacements for his role once his contract expires.

Names being touted to take Ferguson’s seat are Michael Usher, Angela Cox and Angie Asimus.

David Koch, who is still on contract with Seven after leaving Sunrise, is reportedly unlikely to have his contract renewed.

Sonia Kruger is likely to survive, ‘but will absolutely take a “haircut”‘ on her $1.3million salary, a source told the newspaper.

Dr Chris Brown is also safe, but may face a pay cut on his rumoured $2million contract.

Weekend Sunrise host Matt Doran has a ‘question mark’ over his future, the paper reported, but any decision is up in the air.

Sunrise star Mark Baretta’s deal takes him through to 2025, but the paper alleges he will ‘likely take a pay cut’ to keep his role.

Veteran journalist Ann Sanders may also leave the network but plans to do so on ‘her own terms’ the paper claims.
