They may be starring as two of the most iconic lovers in literature, but even and Noah Jupe have confessed they rolled their eyes when they were offered the roles of Romeo and Juliet.

The Shakespearean tragedy has become one of the most adaptated stories in history, with Sadie and Noah taking on the roles for a revival at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Posing for a sultry shoot with Tatler, Noah confessed that he was hesitant to audition when he first learned about the role, but was converted after learning of director Robert Icke's 'fresh and new' take on the story.

Sadie added that she also had reservations about playing Shakespeare, as she feared there's a certain 'right or wrong way' to play the part.

The Stranger Things star said: 'Rob has such a great way of modernising Shakespeare in a way that just enriches the original text.

'Before I met him, I wasn't really interested in doing Shakespeare. It wasn't like Juliet was a dream role of mine.

'But then in re-reading it, but also reading it under the lens of Rob and his vision for it, I felt like this is actually something that I want to do and feel like I need to, right now.'

Noah added: 'When I first got the audition through, I was like ''Romeo and Juliet, again?''

'Everyone's done it so many times, but then within five minutes of speaking to Rob, I was like, 'No, this is going to be completely fresh and new.'

Sharing her fears on playing a Shakespearean role, Sadie said: 'The big fear going into it is that you have to be so trained in Shakespeare and there's a certain right or wrong way of doing it. That's my experience, definitely.'

Noah agreed: 'You see it, and it's all very intellectual and detached and you're not really connected to it.

'Through this [Ickean] process, I understand completely what's going on – and it just goes to show how much knowledge Rob has of what it's really about.'

Noah earned critical acclaim for his heartbreaking role in Chloe Zhao's Hamnet last year, and the film went on to land a string of Oscar nominations, and a historic win for star Jessie Buckley for Leading Actreess.

However, while much of the cast revelled in the glory of awards season, Noah shared he was unable to attend the ceremony as it fell on the eve of Romeo and Juliet's opening night.

He said: 'When it came out that we got nominated, there was a small question of ''Would you?'' and I was like, ''No way, no way.''

Noah was in high spirits as he left the Harold Pinter Theatre

Sadie cut a casual figure in a black trench coat and a cream scarf as she left the London theatre following her latest show

'My brother will be there. He'll be representing the Jupe family – which, honestly, that's all the people need.'

Sadie and Noah's run in Romeo and Juliet is scheduled to run until 20 June, and while the play is very much a 21st Century adaptation, the pair channelled the doomed pair's famous history with a Regency-inspired Tatler shoot.

Sink is making her West End debut after completing work on , the hugely successful  show responsible for turning her into a household name.

The fifth and final season aired to mixed reviews in December, with Sadie reprising her role as skateboarding tomboy Max Mayfield for the last time.

'It feels more like a relief that it’s complete and just such a joy to share it with people,' she told British Vogue last month. 'Or maybe my brain’s so scattered that I can’t actually even think about the fact that it’s over.'

She is now braced for a three month stay in the English capital while she and Jupe, 20, play doomed lovers in the latest interpretation of Shakespeare's enduringly popular tragedy.

The actors admitted they are yet to establish a working dynamic, having only rehearsed together twice.

'We did a chemistry read together and that was, what, like an hour?' Sink revealed. 'And then the second time we met.'

'We had to do a full-on photoshoot for it,' added Jupe, a referenced to the promotional posters currently lining tube station walls across London.
