Ryan Thomas expresses his admiration for his brother Adam’s resilience in the face of arthritis pain on Strictly: “I’m in awe of him”

Ryan Thomas has expressed his pride for his brother Adam Thomas, following the actor’s exit from Strictly Come Dancing at the weekend.

The Waterloo Road star, 35, and his pro partner Luba Mushtuk became the sixth couple to be eliminated from the show after losing out to Angela Rippon and Kai Widdrington in the dance-off.

But his older brother Ryan, 39, has praised the star for getting so far and called him an ‘inspiration’ for dancing while suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

He gushed that Adam had pushed through the pain and added: ‘People have no idea what that guy’s been through.’

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term illness in which the immune system causes the body to attack itself, causing painful, swollen and stiff joints.

RA, the second most common form of arthritis that often begins between the ages of 40 and 50, tends to strike the hands, wrists and knees.

Scientists are currently unsure as to the exact cause of RA, but smoking, eating lots of red meat and coffee drinkers are at higher risk.

A cure has yet to be found, but treatments are available and proven to help slow down the progressive condition.

Adam revealed he had the condition in August, explaining the pain was sometimes so severe he was left barely able to walk or unable to get out of bed.

But he also revealed his diagnosis had inspired him to sign up for Strictly, as he wanted to ‘be able to move again, get fit and do it, all with a smile on my face!’

Taking to his Instagram Story, Ryan filmed himself singing his sibling’s praises, saying: ‘Guys, can we just talk about how amazing my brother is? I mean, who needs friends when you have brothers like me.

‘I’m in awe of the guy. He’s an inspiration to me because he’s completely stepped out of his comfort zone – mentally, physically, emotionally – and I know I speak to him most days, if not every day, and I know what he’s been through.

‘The pain that he covers up with a smile on his face because of his arthritis. People have no idea what that guy’s been through.’

The Coronation Street continued: ‘He doesn’t complain, he just gets his head down and gets on with it and to watch him progress in that show and get so much out of it…

‘Everything happens for a reason, I really believe in that, and I know he’ll take this experience as a positive and I’m just proud of him. I’m really, really proud of him.’

The soap star, who is set to star in Dancing On Ice next year, added: ‘And do you know what I love about him, every time I spoke to him throughout the show, all he ever talks about is how amazing everybody is. The guy just champions everyone.’

Judge Anton Du Beke called the dance-off the ‘closest one’ so far this series, but ultimately all four judges chose to save Angela and Kai.

However, this decision has proven to be controversial, as fans fumed that the ‘wrong person’ went home after the fearsome showdown between the two couples.

Speaking on It Takes Two on Monday, Adam broke his silence after the surprise axe from the show, admitting he ‘knew he’d be in trouble’.

He said: ‘Ah, I mean the Rumba was definitely one of those dances that I wanted to do – probably not the best dance to do on the back of a dance-off!

‘But you know what, I enjoyed it. I thought we did a fantastic job. A really good job. So that being said we can leave with our head held high. ‘

Host Fleur East went on to ask about him about the dance off: ‘Was it tough?’

‘I mean,’ laughed Adam, ‘I knew going up against Angela we’d be in trouble. She’s amazing!

WHAT IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects around 400,000 people in the UK and nearly 1.3 million adults in the US.

Women are up to three times more likely to develop the condition than men. Those with family history of rheumatoid arthritis are also more vulnerable.

It is a long-term illness in which the immune system causes the body to attack itself, causing painful, swollen and stiff joints.

‘But look, if anyone was going to send us home, I’m happy that it was Angela. She’s amazing and I mean she was just so elegant. But yeah I’m really happy for her.’

But not everyone was in agreement, with one fan taking to Twitter, to say: ‘Only caught the dance off of this week’s #Strictly and it was clearly the wrong decision?’

Another echoed: ‘Sorry, wrong decision. Adam had a lot of potential to keep getting better, his scores have been consistently climbing.

‘Angela is great, especially considering her age, but she has a lot of experience, and realistically she won’t get any better than she is now. #strictly.’

Adam also took to his own Instagram on Tuesday with Luba to thank their fans for their support through the competition.

He began by admitting: ‘Hi guys, it’s been a while. Sorry guys, I’ve not been very active on here. Just needed a day to reflect… truthfully I was hungover.

‘We just wanted to jump on here and say to everyone thank you. Thank you for your support, to everyone who picked up the phone and voted week on week. We would never have gotten to week 7 if it wasn’t for you guys, and this one as well actually.’

Turning to Luba he added: ‘I couldn’t have gotten to week 7 without you darling’ and Luba quipped: ‘No you couldn’t’.

Adam continued: ‘What a journey it’s been. But unfortunately our Strictly Come Dancing journey is over. But we had a blast.’

Luba then became visibly tearful, causing Adam to start laughing and say: ‘Don’t cry! It’s fine Luba. No not again!

‘Sorry guys she’s very emotional because she feels like she’s not going to see me again, but you’re going to be in my life forever! Don’t worry. I gotta go get her a tissue now.’

Captioning the clip, he wrote: ‘Thank you so much for all your messages and all the love shared!!! We couldn’t have got as far, as we did, with out you !!!

‘But that is it!! Hanging my dancing shoes up for a little while now, going to put my feet up and watch the show from home with the family!!

‘But will look back on this experience with a huge smile on my face ❤️ Love from me and this special one @lubamushtuk ❤️’.
