Ruth Jones, 59, Uses Hypnosis to Develop Chocolate Aversion and Lose 4.5 Stone After Split from Husband

Ruth Jones shared the vast measures she took in a bid to lose 4.5 stone, just weeks before announcing she’d split from her husband David Peet.

The Gavin and Stacey star, 59, has been showing off her slimmed-down figure after revealing in May that she and David had separated after 26 years of marriage.

Ruth showed off her transformation when she attended the National Television Awards earlier this month, and has been open about her attempts to slim down.

During an interview late last year, the actress admitted she turned to hypnotist Paul McKenna to help her develop an aversion to her biggest vice – chocolate.

She said: ‘I was a little bit cynical. You think of something you hate eating, then think of the chocolate. And keep alternating.

‘I remembered when [mushy peas] were on the menu in school dinners. It completely worked. I didn’t eat chocolate for five years. I couldn’t stand the smell of it.’

Ruth then confessed to the Table Manners podcast that she thought she was ‘sorted,’ and decided to unsuscribe from Paul’s email list, and her aversion to the treat soon came to an end.

Following the news of her split from David back in May, Ruth slipped into a sequinned burgundy gown as she accepted the NTA award for Best Comedy following Gavin and Stacey’s much-praised finale.

Daily Mail previously shared that David had relocated to Canada to be with education assistant Jayne Charity Cook, though he and Ruth insisted in a joint statement they are still ‘good friends’

The split had come as a surprise to her industry friends who believed their marriage was one of the safest in showbiz.

Ruth had previously shared how she lost 4.5 stone back in 2011, admitting it took her 22 months to lose weight after overindulging on holiday.

After returning home with a new outlook on her lifestyle, Ruth openly admitted: ‘I came back from holiday a couple of years ago – January 2010, and we all overdo it on holiday, don’t we?

‘Something just clicked, I felt this is now or never, I wanted to make a positive change for me, and I haven’t looked back.’

Instead of going down the route of fad diets and strict eating, Ruth said she simply managed her portion sizes and calorie intake.

She told The Express in 2019: ‘It’s taken me 22 months to lose four and a half stone. Although I have done loads of diets in my time I have never done it the old-fashioned way – taking in less calories than I was using.’

Ruth had a daily intake of 1,250 to 1,500 calories when she attempted to lose weight.

Ruth had made a string of appearances without her wedding ring in recent months, including on stage at the Bath Literary Festival in May, where she was promoting her new novel, By Your Side.

Following the Gavin and Stacey finale, she and her longtime pal James Corden are now writing a new show for Apple TV.

Deadline reported that the new show is called The Choir and its plot centres around two previously estranged siblings, Ben (James Corden) and Lisa (Ruth Jones).

In the show, misunderstood Ben reluctantly returns to the English town where his sister and family live to ‘a life he never wanted’ after living abroad.

The series will be split into six parts and James and Ruth will also serve as executive producers.
