Russell Crowe: “I still have to work for a living”

Russell Crowe has revealed he still has to ‘work for a living’ after comparing his career to fellow Hollywood megastar Daniel Day-Lewis.

The Aussie actor, 60, who has appeared in huge blockbusters including Gladiator, made a flippant comment about the realities of being a film star in a new interview.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, Russell revealed what it was really like meeting the globally famous Daniel, 67, before making a comment about his wealth.

Host Joe Rogan, 57, first described the Gangs of New York star as a ‘weird dude’ because he ‘disappears [from the spotlight] for a couple of years and makes shoes’.

Russell then remarked that Daniel always manages to ‘come back with a vengeance and a fury’ as he commented on his hugely successful career.

Jokingly comparing their levels of fame, the Cinderella Man actor then quipped: ‘Some of us have to work for a living, mate, you know?’

Russell went on to muse that Daniel must be very independently wealthy in order to maintain such a lifestyle.

Elsewhere in the chat, Russell also gave an insight into what it was like meeting Daniel in person, insisting he is still a huge fan despite being famous himself.

‘You know I do have that thing myself, you know, when I meet somebody that, like, his work I dig or whatever. I’m still the same fan as I was, before I even got into the business,’ he explained.

‘I met Daniel Day-Lewis in a Motel 8 in Conestoga, New York State […] It was just unexpected and you know, it was a cool thing. Such a nice fellow, too.’

While Russell has been nominated for an Academy Award three times, Daniel has won the Oscar for Best Actor three times.

Russell is currently in the United States touring with his band Indoor Garden Party, promoting their new album Prose and Cons.

They recently took their tour to Rome and Russell sparked rumours that he is set to tie the knot with his girlfriend Britney Theriot during the trip.

Russell first sparked speculation he and Britney, 31, were engaged earlier this year when she was seen sporting a huge diamond ring.

Then last month, claims began circulating that they are eyeing up an Italian wedding after reportedly visiting a church while in Rome.

‘Italy was always going to be their wedding destination. Every time they go there, they come back more in love,’ an insider told Woman’s Day at the time.

‘It’s always been their dream to get married there.’

Russell often holidays in Italy with Britney and his sons Charles, 20, and Tennyson, 18 – who he shares with his ex-wife Danielle Spencer.

Gladiator star Russell has long gushed over his love of Italy and Rome in particular, previously describing it as ‘the city where my heart beats faster’.

In February, Britney was seen wearing a dazzling diamond band on her ring finger as they visited at the Ariston Theatre in Sanremo.

Russell is believed to have first met former actress Britney on the set of his 2013 film Broken City, but they did not start dating until many years later.

The pair then confirmed their long-rumoured romance with a kiss on a tennis court in November 2020.

Russell was previously married to Australian actress Danielle, 55, having tied the knot in April 2003 during a ceremony at his farm in Nana Glen.

The couple welcomed two sons together but went their separate ways in 2012 and finalised their divorce six years later.

Despite their high-profile split, Danielle previously told Stellar magazine the couple are still friends and see one another as ‘family’.
