Ruby Rose Calls Sydney Sweeney a ‘Cretin,’ Alleges Role Loss and Criticizes Biopic

Sydney Sweeney has been targeted by Ruby Rose in a blistering takedown.

The Orange Is The New Black star, 39, took to Threads on Monday evening to hit out at the Euphoria actress, 28, for her role in new biopic Christy, following the life of esteemed boxer and domestic abuse survivor Christy Martin.

Following the movie’s release over the weekend, the lacklustre reception – including one of the lowest ever domestic openings for a wide release – has set tongues wagging, leading into Ruby’s explosive rant.

In her online tangent, she hit out at Sydney, as she claimed she was originally set to play Christy, who she calls ‘Cherry’ in the message, and claimed that the original line-up was nearly entirely queer, shortly before claiming Sydney ‘hates gay people’.

She wrote: ‘The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.

‘For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.’

Despite her allegations that Christy ‘deserved better’, the boxer, who shor to fame in the 1990s with 49 wins under her belt, has thrown her support behind Sydney and joined her at many turns of the promo trail.

Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Sydney and Ruby for comment.

Christy follows the incredible story of the boxer’s rise to becoming America’s most well-known female boxer in the 1990s, and later her coach-turned-husband’s 2010 attempted murder of her and also her battle with her sexuality.

After escaping her controlling husband, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder, she went on to marry her rival Lisa Holewyne in 2017, after which she become an advocate for domestic violence survivors.

Ruby took particular umbrage with the use of a straight woman playing a queer character, before making her explosive ‘hatred’ comment.

Sydney previously said of depicting the sportswoman: ‘I felt like I had a whole new superpower when I was her. I learned how to be strong and stand up for myself, and I just felt … invincible, almost…

‘Christy has such an amazing strength to her that she just has carried her entire life, and I really felt that while I was filming…

‘And I think it’s carried on into my personal life. But I’ve kind of always known who I am, and I’ve had really supportive friends and family around me, so that has definitely been super helpful. But I learned a lot through Christy.’

Hours before Ruby’s outburst, Sydney hit back after Christy tanked at the box office. Taking to Instagram on Monday, the actress shared an impassioned post.

Over the weekend, Christy, which ranked in the top 12 worst ever four movies showing on more than 2000 screens, grossed a meagre $1.3 million after being released in 2,011 theaters – averaging $649 per venue, according to The Wrap.

She found herself at the centre of several media storms over her political views, endured the end of a seven-year relationship and appeared to be given the cold shoulder by her peers at big A-list events.

In response to her critics, Sydney wrote on Monday: ‘I am so deeply proud of this movie. proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told…

‘Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life…

‘this film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives…

‘thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud…

‘why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you.’

Sydney’s controversies came to a head this year when it was revealed she was a registered Republican voter and starred in a controversial American Eagle jeans advert which some deemed racist due to a pun linking ‘jeans’ and ‘genes’
