Rob Reiner just revealed what inspired him to change the original ending of his 1989 rom-com classic When Harry Met Sally… starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
‘The original ending of the film that we had was that Harry and Sally didn’t get together, because I had been married for 10 years,’ the 76-year-old filmmaker told CNN’s Chris Wallace last Friday.
‘I’d [also] been single for 10 years, and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody. And that gave birth to When Harry Met Sally. And I hadn’t met anybody, so it was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking, and then walking away from each other.’
Rom-com queen Nora Ephron penned the memorable movie, which centered on two unlikely college acquaintances who move to Manhattan and embark on an on/off friendship spanning 11 years.
The final version of When Harry Met Sally famously ended with the pair deciding to wed three months after he romantically confessed his love for her as the clock struck midnight at a New Year’s Eve party.

Rob’s critically-acclaimed movie – featuring an iconic climax scene inside Katz’s Delicatessen – amassed $92.8M at the global box office from a $16M budget.
Reiner ‘changed the ending’ after meeting his second wife Michele Singer Reiner ‘while we were making the film’ and they will impressively celebrate 35 years of wedded bliss on May 19.
The God & Country producer and the 68-year-old photographer are proud parents of 32-year-old son Jake Reiner, 30-year-old son Nick Reiner, and 27-year-old daughter Romy Reiner.
Rob was previously married to the late great Penny Marshall from 1971-1981, and he’s a grandfather-of-five through her surviving daughter Tracy Reiner.
Reiner will next direct the highly-anticipated rock-mockumentary sequel Spinal Tap II alongside original stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer.
‘We’re making a sequel,’ the two-time Emmy winner confirmed on the November 26th episode of the RHLSTP with Richard Herring podcast.
‘We’re going to start shooting in the end of February and everybody is back.’
Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks are all set to make cameos in the long-awaited follow-up to Rob’s 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap.
But Reiner famously got his start on CBS sitcom All in the Family in 1971 thanks to the connections of his famous father, comedian Carl Reiner.
Rob continued: ‘And that gave birth to When Harry Met Sally. And I hadn’t met anybody, so it was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking, and then walking away from each other’
