Reynold Poernomo of MasterChef fame reveals surprising struggle after Dessert Masters loss: ‘It’s been a real challenge’

Dessert Masters fan favourite Reynold Poernomo was left heartbroken on Tuesday night after he lost to Gareth Whitton during the nail biting grand finale.

The MasterChef Australia veteran, 29, took to Instagram to share his disappointment and said he was devastated he had never received an award for his culinary delights, or even been reviewed.

Alongside a gallery of photos of him hard at work in the kitchen creating a variety of delicious pastry desserts, he wrote a heartbreaking caption.

‘Although I may not have won, my head is still held high. My two best desserts I’ve ever done for Experiential may not have the been the best for tonight,’ he began.

He added he was eager to one day receive an award for the delicious desserts he spends hours in the kitchen making.

‘It has been quite challenging to even gain the attention of the food media in Australia. Going eight years of never being reviewed or winning an award.

‘It’s the reason why I’ve chosen to come back on and put myself out there for the world to see as well as challenge myself amongst peers.

‘I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity and hold great pride being a self-taught chef, so once again thank you all.’

Many of Reynold’s celebrity friends were quick to offer him their words of support amid this difficult time.

‘You are a living embodiment of what can happen when focus, passion and drive converge. We are lucky to have had you set Dessert Masters on its own special course,’ wrote Dessert Masters judge Melissa Leong. 

‘Well done legend! Amazing watching you do your things as always,’ added MasterChef contestant Michael Weldon.

Gareth Whitton was crowned the winner of Dessert Masters 2023 in an emotional grand finale episode on Tuesday night.

He walks away with the title of Australia’s first-ever Dessert Master and $100,000 in prize money.

The pastry chef picked up the highest score from judges Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon for his final dessert

He beat out fan favourites Jess Liemantara and Poernomo for the top honour.

However, Gareth’s win did not sit well with all viewers, many of whom took to social media to vent their frustrations.

Reynold, who has been a fan favourite since his initial appearance on the culinary scene on MasterChef Australia in 2020, once again missed out on the top spot, causing a stir among his loyal followers.
