Rebecca Gibney’s Tear-Jerking Logies Speech

Rebecca Gibney became the fourth woman in history to be inducted into the TV Week Hall of Fame during the 2024 Logie Awards at The Star in Sydney on Sunday.

During the montage of highlights from her incredible decades-long career in television, the New Zealand actress, 59, revealed she was Hollywood hunk Hugh Jackman’s very first onscreen kiss.

The Packed to the Rafters star, who broke into Australian television in 1985 with her role in Zoo Family, locked lips with the heartthrob actor, 55, when they starred in Halifax FP together, a show which debuted in 1994.

‘It was kind of awkward and it was weird and he wouldn’t kiss me properly and he was like, “Well, it feels a bit weird.” Anyway, it kind of worked,’ Rebecca said of the historic moment during an interview in her montage clip.

Despite the underwhelming review of Hugh’s first kiss onscreen, the Wolverine star, 55, took it all in good humour as he was then seen sharing a gushing tribute to his former co-star.

‘Congratulations on being inducted. This has probably been way overdue in my opinion,’ he said in the video as Rebecca tearfully watched on from the crowd.

When Rebecca was finally called up to the stage by her son Zachary to accept her award, The Dressmaker star could barely keep herself from bursting into tears as she read her emotional speech.

‘I am so overwhelmed. I’m sorry. My son, oh my god, I was kind of okay until you came out. Thank you so much,’ she said in a quaking voice.

‘If someone had told 16-year-old me, who suffered crippling anxiety and severe body dysmorphia, that one day I would be standing on this stage with this award, she wouldn’t have believed it,’ she continued.

‘Thank you to the Australian public. Many have grown up with me and have supported me since the early days, and like me think 1984 was only 20 years ago.’

Rebecca went on to thank all the actors she has worked with over the years, as well as cast members, agents, and friends.

But the TV star began to breakdown as she thanked her husband Richard Bell and their 20-year-old son Zachary.

‘To my family, oh, okay I’m not going to get through this,’ she tearfully began.

‘The man I met on the set of Halifax, he was a production designer at the time, Richard Bell.

‘Thank you for always asking the question when a job comes up, “Will it make you happy? Will it bring you joy? Well then you have to do it,” and for sacrificing his own work on so many occasions so that I could.

‘You have been my rock and my love for nearly a quarter of a century and I am so grateful for that.

‘For my son Zac who continues to bring me the best kind of joy. I am so proud of you. I am so proud of the kind, gentle, ridiculously talented individual you are. Thank you for teaching me to be a good mum. I love you beyond words.’

Rebecca finished her heartfelt speech with: ‘I am very proud, to be one of only four women who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, but I know that there are many more to come.’

In the aftermath of accepting her award, Rebecca went on to speak about the hardships she suffered as a child, and how she has managed to now move past them.

When she was asked how she was able to tap into her grief and sadness during emotional acting scenes, Rebecca said: ‘It used to be I’d think about something really sad because I had a pretty traumatic upbringing.

‘So I used to just draw on that stuff I dealt with as a kid and stuff that I witnessed when I was growing up.

‘Then as I got older and actually learned how to be an actor… I started going. “Okay maybe if I put myself in the scene and stop thinking about something that happened when I was 15 it might actually work better.”‘

Rebecca is the fourth woman in history to enter the TV Week Hall of Fame and she is best known for her roles in Halifax FP, Packed to the Rafters, The Flying Doctors, Stingers and The Dressmaker.
