The beloved teen comedy Mean Girls turned 20 years old back in April, but many fans still recognize October 3 as ‘Mean Girls Day.’
October 3 was the date where Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) asked Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) what day it was, and it’s been celebrated by fans ever since, with a new musical reboot debuting this summer.
Actor Rajiv Surendra played Kevin Gnapoor in the film, who stole the show with his iconic talent show rap, to impress his crush, Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan).
While they shared a dance at the end of the film, hinting at a budding relationship, Surendra – who came out as gay in 2016 – doesn’t think they would still be together.
In fact, he believes that Kevin was secretly gay in the film… and that he actually wanted Aaron Samuels, as he revealed to People.

‘I think Kevin secretly wanted Aaron Samuels, but he wasn’t allowed to say,’ Surendra said of his character.
‘And today, he would be allowed to reveal his feelings to Aaron Samuels, and then Aaron Samuels was also secretly gay,’ he added.
Bennett also came out as gay in 2017, revealing he privately came out on the Mean Girls set to co-star Daniel Franzese, who publicly came out himself in 2014.
Surendra added that he still keeps in touch with Bennett and Franzese, and that they get together when they’re in New York City, where he is based, and they all joke that their characters were actually gay in the movie.
‘They reach out. Every time we’re together that comes up. Like, we just make jokes about it. We’re like, “Oh, we’re all gay,”‘ Surendra says.
He added that he’s seen Lindsay Lohan as well, adding whenever he gets together with other Mean Girls stars, ‘it feels like a family.’
‘I think that it feels like a family because the movie has never been forgotten. It’s like, over the years, it’s gotten bigger and bigger and bigger and the public’s response all these years has always been positive and warm,’ he says.
‘All over the place, like for the last two decades, people quote the most obscure things,’ he says of the fan response.

The new ad campaign features a new version of the rap with replica jewelry of what he wore in the film.
‘When we were shooting the rap, the props guy had a whole box full of all this fake jewelry that they bought for me to actually try on,” he said.
‘And then at the end of the scene, I was like, “Can I keep this?” And because he had doubles in their original packaging, he was like, “Yeah, just take,”‘ he added.
