What started as a humble salad ended in a trip to the ER for Rachael Finch this week.
The model, 37, took to Instagram to reveal that she had sliced the top of her thumb off while slicing cabbage with a mandoline slicer.
Rachael shared a photo to Instagram that showed her sitting in the back of an Uber, on her way to the hospital with her thumb raised in the air and wrapped in a tea towel.
‘Yep, sliced the top of my thumb off and put myself in an Uber to ER,’ she captioned the photo.
‘Misha [husband Michael Miziner] was at tennis with the kids. I am pretty good at staying calm in these types of situations. However, I am not good at typing with my left hand.’
Coincidentally, the offending kitchen utensil was gifted to Rachael by My Kitchen Rules star Ash Pollard, with the former Miss Universe runner-up sending Ash a video of her using the slicer before the accident.

Ash took to her Instagram to reveal that she did, indeed gift Rachael the slicer.
‘So here I was trying to be a good friend and introduce like a really good kitchen utensil into her kitchen for her, because she just chops everything manually,’ Ash explained.
‘I thought this is going to change her life.
‘Maybe I just went too big too soon guys, I mean, we’ve all chopped the end of our finger off, haven’t we?’
As she waited to be seen by hospital staff, Rachael shared a text exchange with Ash, writing: ‘In emergency now,’ to which Ash replied: ‘That’s bad. Show me.’
‘I have the tip of my finger with us,’ Rachael added, and Ash could only respond with a shocked: ‘no f***ing way.’
In the wake of the ordeal, Rachael shared a series of videos following her trip to the ER, to give her 322,000 followers an update on her condition.
Standing in her kitchen making a coffee, Rachael admitted to not using the safety guard that came with the slicer.

‘The first few minutes, there was no pain at all. Then in the Uber, and as I got into the ER, the thumb was just pulsating like nothing I’ve felt before,’ Rachael explained in a subsequent video
‘It was given to me as a gift and obviously I had never used one before,’ she said.
‘I saw that square guard thing but I just started using it and started slicing the veg. I didn’t realise how sharp the blade is.’
Rachael went on to relive the accident, revealing that she initially felt no pain at all.
‘I called Misha straight away and I said: “angel, I’m putting myself in an Uber, I’ve got to go to the hospital, I’ve sliced my finger off”,’ she said.
‘I was just holding everything super tight and I could see everything in there – it was gross. I put a Band-Aid on it first then wrapped it in sport tape then put a tea towel over it.’
She continued: ‘The first few minutes, there was no pain at all. Then in the Uber, and as I got into the ER, the thumb was just pulsating like nothing I’ve felt before.’
Rachael said that after arriving at hospital her thumb was cleaned with a saline solution, and she was given ibuprofen and paracetamol before being seated for an almost 7-hour wait.
‘I eventually saw the doctor – I have to go to a hand specialist today, to assess whether I need a skin graft or not,’ she said.

Rachael added: ‘It was really annoying because I didn’t get to have the salad. I was really looking forward to that cabbage salad’

‘It was a very interesting evening. I think I’ve had about three hours sleep in total in between the pulsating thumb and tossing and turning.’
In spite of the shocking accident, Rachael appeared more concerned with her unfinished salad.
‘It was really annoying because I didn’t get to have the salad. I was really looking forward to that cabbage salad,’ she laughed.
