Pretty Woman sequel ‘in the works’ thanks to fake AI posters as Julia Roberts and Richard Gere hold ‘detailed talks with Disney bosses’

A sequel to Pretty Woman could be on the way, thanks to fake posters in circulation that seemingly confirmed it was already in the production.

The movie, made 35 years ago, is still without doubt the most-loved movie to this day.

Julia Roberts, 57, who was 22 at the time when she played sex worker Vivien Ward, and the then 40-year-old Richard Gere, 71, who starred as billionaire businessman Edward Lewis, originally raised eyebrows with their very large age gap.

Vivian, who was hired by Edward, ended up falling in love after he initially hired her to accompany him to some social events.

With the movie held in such high regard by fans, it’s understandable they were disappointed when posters seemingly promoting a second instalment on Netflix turned out to be fake.

However, a senior production source has now said Julia and her co-star Richard Gere have realised just how popular the movie still is – and have opened up ‘detailed talks’ with Disney bosses.

They told The Mirror: ‘No contracts have been signed yet but an early script is being worked on, and barring any unforeseen problems, both Richard and Julia are on board.

‘Pretty Woman 2 appears to be on.’

It’s a far cry from previous comments Julia made in 2019 when she claimed that Pretty Woman could not be produced in this day and age as it has ‘too many holes you could poke at.’

Julia told Guardian’s G2: ‘I don’t think you could make that movie now, right? So many things you could poke a hole in, but I don’t think it takes away from people being able to enjoy it.’

Julia continued: ‘It really is not a measure of talent, particularly in the beginning. It’s a measure of good fortune – and being able to have your wits about you enough to make something out of that good fortune.’

However, she did admit to the publication that she nearly turned down box-office smash Notting Hill.

She said: ‘I did not want to do that movie. The pitch of it sounds awful. Do you want to come and play the world’s biggest movie star and then fall in love with the bookshop owner? No!’

But when Julia met the filmmakers, she liked them so much that she agreed.

Speaking in 2023, Julia was asked where she thought her character was now, to which she replied: 'I think he passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack, smiling. And now she runs his business'

And it’s a good job that she did as the 1999 movie, in which she starred alongside Hugh Grant and Rhys Ifans, made $364million at the box office.

Like Julia, Richard wasn’t always the chosen man to play the rich businessman.

Sean Connery, who died in 2020, Al Pacino, 84, and Burt Reynolds were equally considered for the role of Edward.

Al reportedly turned down the role of Edward because he felt he ‘wasn’t the right actor for it’ after a screen test with Julia.

Before his death in 2018, Burt was asked why he too turned down the role in the movie – admitting ‘because I’m an idiot’.
