Stephen Merchant shares the harrowing details of his near-death experience when he nearly drowned in a lake: ‘I thought to myself, “This is how it ends”‘

Stephen Merchant has revealed he faced a near ‘death experience’ after ignoring important instructions while enjoying a boat trip on a lake near Los Angeles a few years ago.

The comedian and actor, 49, admitted he thought he ‘was going to die’ after jumping into the water even though signs warned not to go swimming.

He recalled how he couldn’t get back onto the boat and left his family ‘panicked’ as he was ‘dragged towards the propeller of the boat engine’.

Speaking on the Films To Be Buried With podcast, the writer of The Office, who is 6ft 7in tall, said: ‘Big Bear lake is a resort north of Los Angeles and I went there once with my family, my mum and dad, my sister and her kids, niece and nephew.

‘And you can take out these kind of little raft boats on to the lake. And a sign says “do not jump into the lake”.

‘I’m a 45-year-old man and I’m thinking “Oh, no I’ll probably jump in the lake because it looks really nice” and so I jumped in the lake. And then I realised the reason they have that sign is you can’t get back into the boat – there’s no ladder, the underside’s kind of curved.

‘So I’m scrabbling to try and get back on the boat and my family and my niece and nephew are all oblivious to my panic and I don’t want to worry the kids, but I’m starting to think “I think this is how I die – I think I’m going to drown in Big Bear Lake with all of my family around me”, which I guess is how I wanted to go.

‘I’m tall and my legs are getting dragged towards the propeller of the engine under the boat.’

Stephen revealed his brother-in-law came to his rescue and ‘hauled’ him back into the boat leaving him with a few ‘cuts on his legs’.

He continued: ‘In the end I managed to notify my brother-in-law who kind of hauled me aboard and I cut up my legs on the side of the boat.

‘I look back on it and think “What was I thinking – they said don’t jump in the lake”. I survived but it felt like touch and go.’

Agreeing he doesn’t tend to listen to what he’s told to do, Stephen added: ‘I think that’s what I mean by just doing something dumb without really thinking it through, like jumping in a lake when you are told not to.

‘I’m not an adventurous man – I’m not a parachute guy, I’m not doing bungee jumps.’

Stephen has been dating girlfriend Mircea Monroe since 2018 after meeting at an awards ceremony in 2017.

Their romance came after Stephen previously revealed that he had trouble finding a girlfriend because of his 6ft 7″ height.

He once told Alan Carr: ‘If they’re down there and I’m up here, it’s a bit tricky.

But by 2019, Stephen admitted it was great to not have to worry about ‘filling’ such a void in life after he had met the St Louis native.

He said: ‘Aside from the fact that she’s great… there’s something very pleasing about not having the endless concern about filling that part of your life.

‘That’s a very lonely life, the life of a single person’.

The couple live together in a £2.4million mansion once owned by former US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

It comes after Stephen was confirmed to be the UK’s richest comedian in September 2023, edging out the likes of other popular stars such as Peter Kay and Ricky Gervais.

The actor initially rose to fame after co-writing the British version of The Office with friend Ricky which was released in July 2001 and later Extras, which was released four years later.

Stephen has a reported net worth of £26.6million and has also enjoyed huge financial success from TV shows such as The Outlaws and Life’s Too Short.

Travis Scott Unveils 2024 UK and European Tour ‘Utopia: Circus Maximus’ with Stop in Manchester’s Troubled Co-op Arena

Travis Scott has announced a 2024 summer UK and European tour of twelve arena and stadium shows – one of which will be at Manchester’s under-fire Co-op Arena.

The new venue has been hit by a wave of cancelled shows, including by Peter Kay, amid a chaotic opening as general manager Gary Roden quit just 12 months into the job after criticising smaller grassroots venues.

The US rapper, 33, announced on Tuesday he is bringing his Utopia: Circus Maximus tour to the other side of the pond after a successful sold-out run in North America last year.

Named after his fourth studio album Utopia, which was the biggest-selling hip-hop released of 2023, the tour has been described as ‘an unparalleled audiovisual experience’.

Of the twelve dates announced, two of them will be in the UK. The music artist is heading to London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on July 11 and Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on July 13.

The show at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be the music star’s largest ever UK headline show to date.

It will kick off with an opening night in Arnhem on June 28, followed by Krakow, (July 2), Zurich (July 4), Nice (July 6) and finally Antwerp (July 9) before debuting in the UK.

Following the London and Manchester dates, the rapper will head to Hamburg, Prague, Cologne, and Milan, before the tour ends in Frankfurt on July 27.

Fans will need to be quick as tickets go on sale at 10am BST on Friday May 10, with some presales also taking place beforehand as soon as Thursday May 9.

Only Tottenham Hotspur Season Ticket Holders and One Hotsupur members will get access at 10am the day before the general sale.

The same applies to Co-op members who are hoping to head to the Manchester show.

However, concert-goers may be put off purchasing a ticket for that date due to the fiasco surrounding the new £365million arena.

The Co-op Live Arena has been billed as the greatest indoor arena for music, comedy and sport ever built outside the United States.

It is the most expensive and largest purpose-built concert venue in Britain and the jewel in the crown for an American-based firm that owns 300 venues around the world.

Following the Travis Scott tour date announcement, angry music fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their concern at the Manchester Co-op Live Arena

Venue mogul Tim Leiweke, co-founder of its owner Oak View Group, also claimed it is also ‘acoustically the most perfect ever built in the UK’ ahead of some of the biggest music and comedy gigs of 2024.

He also said it would be a springboard to building a new arena in the London to finally rival the 02 in Greenwich.

However, it stoked fury among fans of Olivia Rodrigo after her two dates last weekend were postponed – while American rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s show was cancelled while punters queued outside.

Take That also decided to move its upcoming shows from the troubled Co-op Live following the string of cancelled gigs.

The nearby rival AO Arena will now host Take That’s five upcoming dates after the band made the ‘difficult decision’ to ‘give our fans as much notice as possible’.

Following the Travis Scott tour date announcement, angry music fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their concern at the venue announcing new dates.

One user quipped: ‘You’re a joke. We’ve had no update on postponed events and you’re announcing new ones?’

‘It’ll be cancelled’ and ‘What about Olivia?’ added a second and third.

Meanwhile, someone else questioned: ‘Why would anyone risk buying concert tickets for this venue in July, when it isn’t clear if events in May/June will even happen?’

Others chimed in with: ‘They are brave announcing a gig so soon!’ and ‘Well that ain’t happening’.

Olivia Rodrigo’s shows in Manchester this week have been cancelled amid the chaos surrounding the opening of the city’s £350m new venue The Co-Op Live.

The US star was scheduled to perform two dates as part of her Guts World Tour in Manchester on Friday and Saturday but in an Instagram statement on Wednesday night she announced they had been axed.

‘I’ve been having such a great time in Europe so far and I’m sooooo disappointed that we’re unable to perform in Manchester due to on-doing venue-related technical issues,’ Olivia posted.

The singer said she and her team were ‘doing our best to reschedule the show,’ ending her statement by telling her followers: ‘im so bummed and I really hope to see you all soon.’

The Co-Op Live also added a statement to Instagram, leading to hundreds of furious fans flooding their comments, with one declaring: ‘You upset the wrong fan base.’

The venue announced that ‘ticket holders can either hold onto their tickets or obtain a refund from their point of purchase’ but fans voiced their frustration with one commenting: ‘this has been booked since SEPTEMBER you knew it wouldn’t be ready in time.’

Other commented: ‘okay but postponed to WHEN i have a job i need to book time off work ????’; ‘Co-Flop Live. Manchester’s very own Willy Wonka Glasgow Experience. Well done all’; ‘why rush to get this arena open if you guys aren’t completely ready? its not fair for people who are excited to see their favourite singers live!?’; ‘Absolute shambles! Been looking forward to this for ages. People will lose money on trains and hotels. My sister and niece included.’

It is the latest disaster for the The Co-Op Live after fans turned up on Wednesday to see US rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, only for the show to be cancelled at the very last moment.

As a result of the ongoing chaos and the delayed opening of Manchester’s new £350m arena, Peter was regrettably forced to cancel yet another show on Friday.

The venue was due to open on April 23 and is expected to compete with the 02 Arena for some of the world’s biggest sporting and music events.

Delays have seen Gary Roden, general manager of the venue quit after a slew of issues led to a delay in opening.

Gary Roden, general manager of the £365m Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, resigned on Thursday.

Headaches for the arena, which is next door to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, became patently clear after capacity for a test event last Saturday was reduced with just hours’ notice due to power issues.

Photos of the venue from Tuesday also showed some construction work still taking place. The main car park for the arena also appeared to be a storage area for building materials.

Mr Roden was accused of being ‘disrespectful’ and ‘disingenuous’ after claiming that grassroots music venues were often ‘poorly run’.

A statement from the arena said it did not ‘share the sentiment’ expressed by its now-former general manager and that ‘Co-op Live remains committed to grassroots music in Manchester and beyond’.

Rebecca Kane Burton, an ex-boss of London’s O2 Arena, will step in as interim general manager.

The Music Venue Trust hit out at Mr Roden in a statement of its own, telling NME that grassroots music venues were not ‘poorly run’, and it was ‘disrespectful and disingenuous to suggest otherwise’.

They said: ‘Obviously, the irony of making ill-judged, unnecessary and misleading comments about grassroots music venues on the day that the launch of their new arena has unfortunately fallen into such difficulties is not lost on anyone in the music industry, on artists, or on audiences.’

Problems with power at the site, which are believed to have affected the fire safety and emergency services communication systems, led to bosses slashing attendance from around 11,000 to 4,000 at Saturday night’s test event – less than two hours before it was due to start.

Insiders claimed ‘everything was run down to the wire’ ahead of the test show starring Rick Astley.

Manchester City Council’s building control department cannot issue a completion certificate while work is still ongoing at the site, which is understood to include corridors and wiring.

The venue could still operate without this certificate after presenting council bosses with a mitigation strategy to manage potential risks, although details of this plan have not been made public.

Previously, bosses at Co-op Live said teams were on-site ‘throwing everything at it’ to prepare for the venue’s grand opening.

Peter explained his show’s would be rescheduled for a second time after the original dates, April 23 and 24, were pushed back to April 29 and 30. They will now go ahead in May

On Tuesday, Peter’s huge gig at Manchester’s brand new Co-op Live arena was cancelled, just hours before the comedian was due to take to the stage at the 23,500-capacity venue.

The comedian’s second show at the venue set for Wednesday evening was also cancelled.

The highly-anticipated show would have been the grand opening for the city’s flagship new venue, the largest in the UK.

But just a day before the show was due to take place, it was announced that both shows had been cancelled, as work is still to be completed on the venue, which is yet to be signed off by the council’s building control.

Co-op Live confirmed that both shows would be rescheduled, and will instead would take place on the 29th and 30th April.

A spokesperson for Co-op Live said: ‘Following our first test event on Saturday, regretfully we have made the difficult decision to reschedule our two opening performances by Peter Kay.

‘These dates will move from 23 April and 24 Wednesday to Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April.

‘It is critical to ensure we have a consistent total power supply to our fully electric sustainable venue, the completion of which is a few days behind. Rescheduling gives us the extra time we need to continue testing thoroughly.

The shows were set to be the grand opening act for the Co-Op Live Arena, but there is still work to be completed on the venue

‘This is vital to satisfy the rigorous set of guidelines and protocols that are necessary for a venue of this size.

‘Peter Kay has very graciously agreed to perform his record-breaking comedy at Co-op Live on 29 (rescheduled from 23) and 30 (rescheduled from 24) April 2024.

‘All tickets remain valid and ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase. Refunds will be available for those who can no longer attend.

‘We are very sorry for the inconvenience that this change will undoubtedly cause for some. We are thrilled to welcome Peter Kay as our grand opening act just a few days later than planned.’

Meanwhile Peter said: ‘I’m truly gutted as I know how disappointing this will be for everyone with tickets, but obviously it’s a brand-new venue and it’s important that everything is finished and safe for full capacity audiences.’

‘Fortunately, we’ve been able to reschedule the shows to next week, (I’ll have to miss my Bums & Tums class) but hopefully I’ll see you then.’

Co-op Live added: ‘We can’t wait to welcome fans to Co-op Live for our official grand opening events with Peter Kay, and to showcase Co-op Live at its very best.

‘We will still be hosting The Black Keys on 27 April in the lower bowl with 10K fans as planned, and will continue to test the resilience of the venue and its operations.’

This comes after problems with power at the site, which are believed to have affected the fire safety and emergency services communication systems, led to bosses slashing attendance from around 11,000 to 4,000 at Saturday night’s test event – less than two hours before it was due to start.

Previously, bosses at Co-op Live said teams were on-site ‘throwing everything at it’ to prepare for the venue’s grand opening.

A Co-op Live spokesman said: ‘Opening a venue of this size requires working very closely with multiple stakeholders and responsible authorities to deliver against a rigorous set of guidelines and protocols.

‘Leading into our test event, some systems had limited electrical power which we were only able to mitigate by reducing capacity.

This meant we made the difficult decision to reduce the capacity of our test event and deeply regret the impact this had on our invited guests.

‘We do recognise that many people were inconvenienced yesterday evening at very short notice and apologise to all affected.

‘We’re working hard to complete Co-op Live and look forward to welcoming fans and artists to the venue soon.’

According to the venue’s website, Peter’s 2010 tour still officially ranks with the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling comedy tour of all time.

Peter shocked fans after appearing in a rare photograph as he performed his stand-up show in May last year.

And the comic said: ‘See how much weight Peter Kay has lost.’

Before announcing the new tour, Peter had disappeared from public life, before releasing a statement in December 2017 to say he was returning to the limelight.

In November 2022, Peter then delighted the nation by announcing he would be returning to touring for the first time in 12 years, including a monthly residency at London’s O2 Arena.

Taking to the stage for his first night in Manchester, Peter was moved to tears as he received a standing ovation from the audience that lasted several minutes.

Struggling to compose himself following the reaction, Peter told the crowd: ‘Oh Jesus look at me, I mean what’s that all about… how am I supposed to do bloody comedy now?’

Co-op Live arena faces backlash from Peter Kay fans as show is cancelled for the second time, supporters defend comedian

Peter Kay fans have slammed Manchester’s new £350million Co-op Live Arena after two of the comedian’s shows at the venue were postponed for a second time.

Understandably, rather than taking aim at the comic, the arena has been labelled ‘a mess’, ‘shambolic’ and ‘farcical’.

Revealing the news, Peter explained that the arena ‘still isn’t ready and so, as yet, remains untested for a large-scale audience’.

The chaos has resulted in the boss of the 23,000-seater indoor venue – envisaged to compete with London’s O2 Arena for some of the world’s biggest sporting and pmusic events – Gary Roden, quit over a slew of issues.

A test event last Saturday saw its capacity reduced drastically at the last minute due to power issues, photos taken on Tuesday also showed some construction work still taking place and the main car park for the arena appeared to be a storage area for building materials.

The BAFTA-winning Bolton native added today: ‘They are having to reschedule my two shows yet again (I know I can’t believe it either).

‘It’s very disappointing but your safety is very important, and I won’t compromise that.’

Peter had two shows lined up at the venue, originally for April 23 and 24, which were rescheduled on Tuesday to April 29 and 30. They are now penciled in for May 23 and 24.

Fans reacted by X saying: ‘We all know that building projects do overrun, but the @TheCoopLive project seems to be in a mess. First it was power installation needing more time now it is critical systems that aren’t ready . In reality the building isn’t finished and they should just admit it!…

‘Not your fault. Pretty shambolic for the venue to have initially announced the rescheduled dates for less than a week after the original dates when it was painfully obvious it wouldn’t be ready though…

‘It’s getting farcical now, no wonder Roden resigned…

‘Everyone slagging off Peter Kay for cancelling needs to remember, that building is not safe yet, but you lot would be the first to start scricking if it came down round yer ears…

‘I can imagine you are absolutely fuming! The whole point of us booking tickets was something special about supporting local talent to be the first in a local venue. #Cooplive is embarrassing!…

‘It’s not your fault Peter. However an email from the venue would be nice too as they have gone radio silent. We didn’t really expect to be seeing you on Monday and thought it was rushed but still gutted…

‘Not your fault but frustrating for everyone…

‘I’m sorry but @TheCoopLive knew this a week ago and I have wasted so much money now on travel and hotels. This is embarrassing for you…

‘Absolute shambles #PeterKay show @TheCoopLive postponed from this week to next week and now again to end of May. Really disappointed as can’t go now due to other bookings been waiting to see Peter Kay for years never lucky enough to get tickets before.’

Peter’s highly-anticipated show would originally have been the grand opening for Manchester’s flagship new venue – the largest in the UK.

But just a day before the show was due to take place, it was announced that both shows had been cancelled, as work is still to be completed on the venue, which is yet to be signed off by the council’s building control.

There were problems with power at the site on Saturday’s Rick Astley test event, which are believed to have affected the fire safety and emergency services communication systems.

Bosses slashed the attendance from around 11,000 to 4,000 less than two hours before it was due to start.

‘This meant we made the difficult decision to reduce the capacity of our test event and deeply regret the impact this had on our invited guests.

‘We do recognise that many people were inconvenienced yesterday evening at very short notice and apologise to all affected.

‘We’re working hard to complete Co-op Live and look forward to welcoming fans and artists to the venue soon.’

A concert by The Black Keys has also been impacted by the latest delay after being moved from April 27 to May 15.

Earlier this week, Peter’s huge gig at Manchester’s brand new Co-op Live arena was cancelled, just hours before the comedian was due to take to the stage.

The comedian’s second show at the venue on Wednesday evening was also cancelled.

The highly-anticipated show was due to go ahead on Tuesday at the 23,500-capacity venue, and would have been the grand opening for the city’s flagship new venue, the largest in the UK.

But just a day before the show was due to take place, it has been announced that both shows have been cancelled, as work is still to be completed on the venue, which is yet to be signed off by the council’s building control.

Co-op Live has confirmed that both shows will be rescheduled, and will instead take place on the 29th and 30th April.

‘Lovely Manchester you made me cry… where did it come from, all that emotion?’

The Intriguing Personal Life of Stephen Merchant: From His Glamorous Actress Girlfriend to Impressive TV Empire

Stephen Merchant was confirmed to be the UK’s richest comedian back in September 2023, edging out the likes of other popular stars such as Peter Kay and Ricky Gervais.

The actor initially rose to fame after co-writing the British version of The Office with friend Ricky which was released in July 2001 and later Extras, which was released four years later.

Stephen, 49, has a reported net worth of £26.6million and has also enjoyed huge financial success from TV shows such as The Outlaws and Life’s Too Short.

But how has Stephen Merchant become so successful and what do we know about his private life?

Read on for everything you need to know about his fame and fortune and relationship with actress Mircea Monroe.

How much is Stephen Merchant worth?

Stephen’s income comes mainly from his numerous TV production businesses, with his main company, SJJM LTD, worth over £25 million in assets, jumping by £3million between 2021 and 2022.

However, he previously revealed that he did not always live a life of luxury.

Speaking to The Telegraph in 2010, he said: ‘I remember going to a party once at someone’s house and they had a pool. I thought, ”these people must be Richard Branson!”’

Despite possessing a large fortune, the comic refuted the idea that he might be able to spend more lavishly as a result.

He added: ‘There is this weird idea that you get a bit of money or success and suddenly your life is endlessly being carried around in a sedan chair just throwing caviar away. It isn’t.’.

While some prefer fame over fortune, Stephen recently admitted he would like to turn back the clock and become an unknown again.

He said: ‘The unique thing about The Office was that no one knew who we were, so there were no expectations.

‘You’re not thinking about the papers or about the audience. You’re just thinking, ‘This is fun, let’s get it made’. It’s hard to get back to that moment.’

How long have Stephen Merchant and Mircea Monroe been in a relationship?

He said: ‘Aside from the fact that she’s great… there’s something very pleasing about not having the endless concern about filling that part of your life.

Paddy is about to face a potentially acrimonious and expensive divorce battle with Christine, his loyal partner of nearly two decades.

On Monday, proceedings began to formerly end their marriage, with Christine hiring the no-nonsense family lawyer Catherine Bedford of top London firm, Harbottle and Lewis.

Nicknamed the ‘pitbull,’ she represented Ant McPartlin’s wife Lisa in her bitter battle with the I’m A Celeb star, while she is also acting for Games of Thrones star Sophie Turner, who split from American singer Joe Jonas last year.

A friend of Christine’s told the MailOnline: ‘The gloves are off, she was good to Paddy, she stayed at home and brought up his children while he was out earning money.

‘It’s going to be an expensive divorce for Paddy. Christine has had enough.’

Last month, Paddy was asked by Emma Willis why he was going back to his roots as a stand-up comedian.

Announcing his downfall, Paddy said: ‘Errr… well, the money’s run out now, it’s taken about eight years to spend it all and I’m like, “Oh, I’ve got to build it back up”,’ he told her.

While, just before Christmas, the star posted a picture on Instagram of two mugs together labelled ‘his’ and ‘hers’, fuelling rumours that he was in a relationship after a difficult divorce from Christine.

In July 2022, it was reported in The Sun on Sunday that the end came when Christine was told Paddy had kissed a star after they appeared on a TV show together.

The woman was never named though Christine knows her identity and was said to be ‘devastated’ after learning of it during the The Games.

Just a week later it reported how Paddy had also been sending direct messages on social media to a BBC presenter, which Christine discovered in March 2022.

It is understood that was a contributing factor to the relationship ending, but Paddy has never responded to any of the allegations.

Behind the scenes, Paddy was said to be trying to persuade Christine that they shouldn’t get divorced as they can do much more together as a couple, but she refused to budge.

‘She was only 19 when she met him and is enjoying this new lease of life,’ said a friend of the star.
