Their happy news came just weeks after Perrie revealed she’d suffered two heartbreaking miscarriages in a candid and tearful appearance on Paul C Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast.

The singer shared that ahead of welcoming son Axel, she’d gotten pregnant once before, but sadly miscarried early on in the pregnancy.

She explained: ‘Axel’s a rainbow baby. So I had a miscarriage very early on with my first ever pregnancy, and it was so early. I remember finding out I was pregnant.

‘Obviously, I started bleeding not long after, and I went to the hospital and I had the scan and they were like, “There’s no baby.”

‘And I was like, “oh, I’ve made this up. Maybe I got a false positive or something.” And I remember being on my own at the appointments because nobody was there.’

Perrie admitted that as a result of the miscarriage, she was ‘on edge’ while expecting Axel, as she was desperate to make it past the 12 weeks.

‘And then when I had Axel, when I was pregnant with him, I loved being pregnant, it was one of the happiest times of my life. Like, I just love carrying babies. And it was lovely,’ she said.

‘But I was a bit on edge thinking, “oh gosh, I want to get past the 12 weeks. I want to get past this.” And when I get past every scan and that pregnancy was complete bliss, it was perfect.’

A year after Axel’s birth, she discovered she was expecting once again while rehearsing for Little Mix’s final tour in 2022.

However, she was left devastated after tragically losing her baby at 24-weeks, calling the day the couple learned of their heartbreaking loss ‘the worst day of my life’.

Perrie said: ‘And then we fell pregnant again after. So maybe a year and probably not even. Actually, not even a year, because Axel wasn’t even walking yet and we were pregnant.

‘And I remember I found out when I was rehearsing for the Little Mix tour, the last Little Mix tour, I was at rehearsals and I thought, “Oh I don’t feel good.” Every symptom under the sun. I was like, “I think I’m pregnant”.

‘And then we went for what was a 20-week scan, but we were actually 22 weeks, and that was just the worst day of my life. Like horrendous.

‘I just knew something was wrong in the scan, and he just kept going over the same thing, over the same thing… I’ve never experienced an out-of-body experience where everything goes in slow motion.’

Recalling the moment she and Alex returned home from the hospital after learning the devastating news, she said: ‘So then I remember sobbing. He [Alex] was injured at the time and he couldn’t really drive.

‘He was struggling to drive, but I couldn’t see straight. I was just distraught. And yeah, we basically lost the baby at like 24 weeks.’

Perrie emotionally opened up about the devastation of the loss, explaining:  ‘It’s weird because the first time it happened, I think because it was so early, I was like, “oh that’s hard.”

‘But I think when you’re fully carrying at 24 weeks and you’ve planned out like the room and all these things, it’s really hard.

‘And nobody knows other than like immediate friends and family. And I remember shortly after friends would message and be like, “How’s the bump?” And I’ll be like, “There is no bump”.’

She later added that her overwhelming grief was compounded after discovering she was still producing milk despite the miscarriage.

Detailing how unprepared the couple had been for their ‘world to crumble’ to Glamour, Perrie recalled: ‘It felt like it came out of nowhere.

‘Every scan before had been fine, we just weren’t expecting to go into the 22-week scan, and for our world to just crumble. And then the whole experience was very traumatic.

‘A few days later, I remember being in the shower and my milk came in. I remember just going out the room like, “Mam!”, and she was like, “What, what, what?”, and I was like, “I’ve got milk!” She was like, “Oh, darling, they said this would happen.”

‘But I just wasn’t expecting it. I was devastated. That was the worst bit. My body was prepared for the baby, but the baby was gone.’

Praising her husband-to-be, she admitted that she was ‘very lucky’ to have Alex at her side during the ordeal, revealing the sportsman had been ‘traumatised’ by their loss, but focused on ‘trying to stay strong for her.’

She said: ‘We are very lucky to have each other. We love each other so much. He was just so worried about me, and I think he felt the lack of control, like there was nothing he could really do.

‘But him just being there, and being by my side through the whole thing, just made it so much better.

‘I kept asking him, “Are you okay?” and he’s like, “It’s not about me,” and I’m like, “Yes it is though”. We both lost a baby. We both went through it.

‘He’s very like that with emotions, he tries to just suck it up and move on. But I could see that he was traumatised about it. I think he just wanted to try and be strong for me.’

Last month, Alex spoke about the impact of the miscarriages on him to the Athletic, admitting it had taken the couple a long time to get to the place where they felt ready to try again.

The former England star described feeling discomfort after a fellow player had asked about how their unborn baby was doing, around six months after the loss.

‘When you start a family, that’s when you start to learn it’s not easy to have a child, that things can go wrong,’ he said.

‘It’s so difficult — especially for women when they are literally growing another human being inside them, the connection they feel to that, and then can things go wrong and they can lose the baby.

‘It’s so difficult, especially losing the baby so late into the pregnancy. It definitely helped that we had Axel to focus on, but it was obviously difficult.

‘It took a while for us to get to the place where we felt, “OK, should we try this again?”

Alex admitted that while he is currently without a club after leaving Turkish side Besiktas, he has been glad to have been able to spend time at home with Axel and supporting Perrie in the lead-up to their second baby’s arrival.

He said: ‘It’s been nice to be at home with Perrie for the past few months and to have this time with Axel as well. He’s excited [about his new brother or sister]. We all are.’
