Perrie Edwards has admitted she was left embarrassed when her friends didn’t tell her past relationships weren’t working.
The Little Mix star, 32, is currently engaged to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who she met in 2016 and shares son Axel, three, with.
But before her romance with the footballer, Perrie dated One Direction’s Zayn Malik in 2012, which saw them get engaged in 2013 and split in 2015.
She released a single that preaches the virtues of ‘not applauding your partner for doing the bare minimum’, as she explained to Rolling Stone.
Her new release, If He Wanted To He Would, is about a toxic relationships but with the view of a best friend.
And during a chat on The Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill on Friday, he asked her if she had been in a situation before where you’ve had to be like ‘this isn’t working, break up with this guy’.

Perrie replied: Many times! Many many times. It’s such a relatable concept because so many friends go through it, people in your life.
‘When I was going through it, nobody said anything. And that annoyed me more. I was like embarrassed.
‘My friends all knew exactly what was happening, but when you’re in love or when you’re in a relationship you can’t see it.
‘You’re just so obsessed with that person and you know the red flags are there, but you chose not to see them. And that’s exactly what I did.
‘And after I went through like heartbreak and I went through such a horrendous time, when my friends were coming to me, it wasn’t that I was this bitter cow like “you need to be miserable too!”
‘I was just like, I’m never ever going to let my friends go through what I went through one I know something.’
After dating Zayn, Perrie went on to date Our Girl star Luke Pasqualino, but after a few months they split because there was ‘no spark’.
Perrie also shared insight into her ‘first love’ in a hard-hitting interview with Paul C Brunson on his We Need To Talk podcast and also revealed she has suffered two miscarriages in her life.
Reflecting on her dating history, Perrie, who did not name her ex-partner, admitted that behaviour in her ‘first relationship’ left her fearing the ‘pain’ of meeting someone new, as she was led to believe their actions were ‘normal.’
She said: ‘I think definitely at the time I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal.

While Perrie has not confirmed if the song is aimed at someone specific, a previous release alongside her band Little Mix was widely believed to be a swipe at Zayn

Perrie went on to gush about her fiancé Alex’s ‘laid-back nature,’ after the couple’s engagement in 2022
‘Because it was my first relationship, first love. I was like, ‘Oh, this is how it’s supposed to feel. It’s supposed to feel a little bit toxic. In some ways, this is probably normal, right?’
‘And then when I became single, I was almost thinking, like, I never, ever want to go through that again. I didn’t even want to meet anybody. I was like, that’s me done. I don’t think I could bear that pain.’
‘But now, reflecting back, I’m thinking, oh, that probably wasn’t good. And I’ve noticed it a lot.’
Perrie shared that she first miscarried early into her first pregnancy, and discovered the devastating loss when she started bleeding and headed to the doctors.
She then went onto reveal that a year after giving birth to her ‘rainbow baby’ Axel, she discovered she was pregnant again, but tragically lost her baby at 24 weeks.
Little Mix’s single Shout Out To My Ex features a number of lyrics that are widely thought to be aimed at the former boy band member.
One sassy line sees the singer croon: ‘I hope she gettin’ better sex, Hope she ain’t fakin’ it like I did, babe.’
However, in a chat with DailMail at the time, Perrie played down the line, and claimed it was ‘just a bit of fun’.
Breezily, she explained: ‘When you read it on paper it looks “woah!” Honestly, all our families have heard it and they think it’s fun. When you hear the song and you see the video you’ll realise it’s a bit more tongue in cheek than what it is. It’s just a bit of fun.’
