The star added, ‘And for me, time stopped. It’s a great trauma, because I saw her losing consciousness.’
She explained that while in the hospital, she had felt ‘numb’ and remembered ‘telling people, “Oh, my sister just got run over by a car.”‘
The Vanilla Sky actress – whose sister survived the accident – told Elle that if she witnessed such an incident in the present day, she ‘would have been hysterical.’
Penelope expressed that when it comes to her own emotions, there is a ‘back-and-forth dance between fiction and reality’ and also stated that she has a hypersensitivity when it comes to other’s feelings.
While stating that it ‘plays into a certain stereotype’ when it comes to acting, Cruz revealed that she feels ‘lucky to have it.’
‘But maybe it makes me feel or suffer things more. I can feel it; it’s like a hypersensitivity in every way – visually, to sound, to people’s feelings,’ she added.
‘It’s been one of the main things I deal with in therapy: how to work a balance so I can keep feeling those things without making those feelings my own.’
In Michael Mann’s movie, which premiered in theaters last month on Christmas Day, Penelope took on the role of Laura Ferrari – the wife of Enzo Ferrari.

In the film, both she and Enzo struggled with the loss of their son, Dino, and Cruz discussed the role and the varying emotions of the character – such as when her husband, Enzo, has an affair.
‘You could really feel the deep depression that she was having for so many years of her life,’ she told Good Morning America during a joint interview with her co-star, Adam Driver.
‘She had a difficult personality. She’s broken and that’s what people didn’t want to see. And that’s why I took it as something personal, you know?’
‘The need of giving her a voice because she represents so many other women in the world that also don’t have one,’ the Blow star continued.
Adam also talked about some of the luxurious vehicles that they were able to drive while shooting the project, recalling, ‘We raced some contemporary Ferraris in Modena.’
‘And then I drove one of the chassis of one of the cars and you are immediately aware of how dangerous they are.’
However, Cruz didn’t drive any of the vehicles and recalled sitting in the passenger seat of one of the cars inside Piero Ferrari’s garage with Driver.
‘And I said, “Don’t start it.” I appreciate it from there. Like without motion,’ she remembered with a small laugh.

She revealed to the outlet that her kids don’t have social media, adding that they, ‘don’t even have phones. It’s so easy to be manipulated, especially if you have a brain that is still forming.’
‘And who pays the price? Not us, not our generation, who, maybe at 25, learned how a BlackBerry worked. It’s a cruel experiment on children, on teenagers.’
She then opened up about their home life, stating that her husband, Javier, ‘sings and he’s a great dancer.’
‘And he does this amazing impression of Mick Jagger. He’ll imitate Al Pacino and De Niro talking to each other. It’s incredible.’

‘Now it makes more sense, to discuss turning 50. It’s a huge, beautiful thing, and I really want to celebrate that with all my friends. It means I’m here and I’m healthy, and it’s a reason to have a party.’
