Pauly Shore revealed that he had a benign tumor removed from his pancreas in a teary clip on Instagram posted Wednesday afternoon.
The 57-year-old comedian implored his 642,000-plus followers on the platform to circulate his message about getting preventative scans, in hopes that they could potentially save lives by spreading awareness about the cause.
‘Preventative scans are rare,’ Shore said. ‘Most people only get a scan when something is already wrong.
‘People avoid them for different reasons. Maybe they can’t afford it (a full body scan costs around $1,000-$2,000), or maybe they don’t want to know.’
The star of 90s comedies such as Encino Man, Son in Law and Bio-Dome was seated in a hospital bed as he spoke about the chain of events that led to the major medical procedure being performed.
‘About three months ago, I went in for a preventative scan in Las Vegas at SimonMed, where they scan your body from head to toe,’ Shore said in the caption of the clip. ‘They check for tumors, cancer, aneurysms, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, you name it. Being in my 50s, I thought it was the right thing to do.’

Shore said after undergoing the checkups, medical professionals told him that they needed to follow up on urgent issues.
‘A week later, they called me with the results,’ Shore said. ‘They noticed something in my abdominal area. It was a tumor inside my pancreas.’
Shore said that he coordinated communications between his physicians in California and Nevada; and that he was grateful that it was detected early, even if it was non-cancerous.
‘I contacted my doctors in LA, and that’s when everything got put into motion,’ Shore said. ‘Thankfully, my tumor was benign, it might have been there for 15 to 20 years. It wasn’t an emergency, but my doctor felt removing it was the right thing to do.’

Shore admitted that the realities of the harrowing situation took a toll on him mentally.
‘It really messed with me,’ Shore said. ‘Knowing there was a tumor inside me … could it grow? Burst? Turn into something worse? You just don’t know.’
Shore said that while he’s always been pretty thorough about his health, his decision to take an extra precaution paid off in this instance.
‘This was just me following my instincts,’ Shore said. ‘I’ve always been on top of my health. Going to the gym, using saunas, massages, having my teeth checked, doing blood work, colonoscopies, chiropractor, etc.’
