Paul Mescal was left very red-faced on Saturday when his attempt at doing an Australian accent hilariously backfired.
The Gladiator II actor, 28, who is currently Down Under to promote the upcoming movie, was asked if he could speak in an Aussie accent during a new interview.
Speaking to news.com.au, the Irish star was asked to tell Aussies why they should see the Gladiator sequel, while speaking in the country’s native accent.
While Paul was initially happy to try, he quickly realised he could not nail the world-famous accent as he said: ‘Go to the f**ken cinemas, mate!
‘Go to the cinema, it’s a great movie. How’s that? F**ken swell!’
Paul’s cringeworthy imitation of an Australian inflection left him in stitches as he poked fun at his ‘horrendous’ attempt at the local twang.
He quipped: ‘I apologise for that horrendous, horrendous accent!’
Despite being unable to nail the Aussie accent, Paul has been having the time of his life promoting Gladiator II in Sydney in recent days.

He is taking over from Russell Crowe as the lead actor in the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator, which is arriving in cinemas on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Paul revealed whether he has heard from Russell since he scored the lead role in Gladiator II.
Russell, 60, famously won an Academy Award for his role as Maximus in Gladiator, which earned close to half a billion dollars at the box office.
In the new release, Paul is taking on the new leading role of Lucius, who idolised Russell’s champion gladiator in the beloved original.
Russell has previously claimed he had ‘no say’ in Gladiator II and wasn’t consulted on the movie, even admitting he is ‘slightly jealous’ of new leading man Paul.
Now, Paul has revealed whether he has had any contact with Russell since being cast in the Ridley Scott directed sequel.
During an appearance on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie, Paul said he hasn’t had a phone call from Russell since taking on the role.
‘I didn’t, no,’ he confessed, but said he still hopes to get in touch with the New Zealand actor.
Paul said he has seen interviews where Russell has spoken about the sequel, but felt he has been ‘nothing but kind’ towards the upcoming release.

Russell recently weighed in on the long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster that made him a global superstar.
Shutting down rumours he will be making a cameo appearance in the sequel, Russell hinted he is not fully support of some story aspects of the new film.
Speaking on the Kyle Meredith with… podcast in June, the Beautiful Mind actor said he feels ‘uncomfortable’ about the new film, which he claimed he had ‘no say in’ because of his character’s tragic death.
‘A couple of the things I’ve heard I’m like, ”no, no, no, that’s not in the moral journey of that particular character”,’ he said.
‘But I can’t say anything, it’s not my place, I’m ”six foot under”. So we’ll see what that is like.’
