Paddington Bear: From Page to Red Carpet Star!

Paddington Bear has quickly become one of Britain's best-loved cultural figures.

Created in 1958 by the late Michael Bond, he has appeared in 29 books and three blockbuster live-action films, released in 2014, 2017, and 2024, each smashing box office records.

Last year, he made his West End debut with Paddington The Musical, earning a rare five-star clean sweep from critics. 

On stage, actress Arti Shah brings him to life, while off-stage, his voice is performed by puppeteer James Hameed, following in the footsteps of the late Sir Michael Hordern.

But the cuddly bear's fame isn't confined to pages or screens.

From rubbing shoulders with royalty to gracing the glossy pages of Vogue, Paddington appears to receive an invite to every starry occasion.

The event marked the final of the BBC 500 Words national writing competition, which this year attracted nearly 50,000 entries from children across the UK.

Following the ceremony, the Queen greeted the beloved 4ft character.

'Hello Paddington – how very nice to meet you, thank you very much for coming,' Camilla told the bear.

'You're very kind, you are going to give all your marmalade sandwiches to all these children.

'Perhaps I can have one too?'

The bear gave the Queen an enthusiastic thumbs up to the request and offered the sandwiches on plates beneath red hats.

This event comes just days after Paddington stole the spotlight at the 2026 EE BAFTA Awards as he charmed the crowd during an 'epic' appearance.

The loveable character, who has made his West End debut in his own musical, took time away from the stage to appear at the awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

As he made his way on stage, Paddington tipped his iconic red hat to the A-list crowd, which included the likes of Emma Stone, Kate Hudson, Leonardo Dicaprio and Timothee Chalamet.

Dressed in his blue duffle coat with toggles, the bear ditched his battered brown suitcase and marmalade sandwich for the winning envelope and gong as he presented the Children's & Family Film award. 

Standing behind his very own minature podium, Paddington, who stands at 4 feet tall, said: 'You all look surprised to see me, I'm as surprised as you are.'

The bear went on to mention his beloved elderly aunt, who raised him in Peru, and his family the Browns, who adopted him when he came to London.

Paddington continued: 'My Aunt Lucy says you have to face your fears, unless its a snake then you have to walk away very slowly.

'Mrs Brown said this is a first for BAFTA, I am the first bear to present an award and the first presenter to get marmalade all over a BAFTA, sorry about that, I was going to lick it off but apparently that's not very good manners.'

Paddington went on to announce Boong, a 2024 Indian Manipuri-language coming-of-age drama film, as the winner.

This is just one of many starry events the popular bear has been invited to.

In December, Paddington paid a visit to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom.

Musician and composer , known for being a part of boyband , sang a Paddington song from the West End musical after all the contestants on the show performed.

He then brought out a very special guest - Paddington himself, with the pair delivering a special performance of The Explorer.

In November, Paddington featured in an issue of Vogue as he discussed his musical. 

The loveable character took time away from the stage to chat with British Vogue in the Royal Suite of London's Savoy Hotel. 

As well as deconstructing his outfit, the glossy magazine lauded the loveable bear as the poster boy for 'immigrants making good'  following his move to London from darkest Peru.

In a clip shared to Instagram Paddington was asked about his opinion of this season's fashions, to which he replied: 'Being winter, everyone is wearing coats and hats.'

'I was told that British designers think duffle coats are very much in vogue, which I hear is a very good thing to be'.

When it comes to British style Paddington's said due to the UK's weather, he loved raincoats, umbrellas and wellington boots, which he branded both practical and stylish. 

Meanwhile, the magazine praised the character for being 'inclusive, culturally diverse and accepting'.

For any fashion lovers hoping to replicate Paddington's style he later went on to reveal just where he picked up both his unique look.

'Well, my hat is very special because it belonged to the explorer Montgomery Clyde. He came to Peru a long time ago and was very kind to my Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo,'

'So when I came to London, I was hoping to find him. And my coat belonged to [Paddington's adoptive father] Mr Brown, then [adoptive brother] Jonathan and then they kindly gave it to me'.

The week before this, the  said George, Charlotte, and Louis would be jealous that she and had a meet and greet with Paddington at the Royal Variety performance. 

William and Catherine joined an array of stars like , and host at the Royal Albert Hall in , which senior members of the  take turns to support.

Among this year's cast was the world-famous Paddington, whom both Catherine and William were particularly taken with. The future King even remarked on the bear's 'yummy' sandwich.

'Can I shake your hand? Your sandwich looks very nice,' William asked the bear. 'The way you were singing was totally incredible.' And as Paddington tipped his hat, William beamed, pointing to his sandwich and saying: 'It looks very yummy.'

However, it was before the annual charity event, when Kate told nine-year-old Emelie and Olivia Edwards, who handed the royal a stunning posy of winter-themed flowers, that her children would be sad not to have seen beloved Paddington. 

Bending down to speak to the twins in a green velvet evening gown, the Princess called the flowers 'sweet' while asking the girls if they were excited about the night ahead and if they were Paddington fans.  

Nodding, Catherine told them: 'My kiddies will be very sad [to have missed the show], we are going to have to keep it a big secret.'

Bringing her finger to her lips, she added: 'They were very sad not to be joining us.'

Paddington was also a special guest at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. 

He joined former Love Island star Amber Gill as they posed for snaps on the red carpet at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

Paddington himself ambled down the red carpet in his famous blue duffel coat and red hat.

Back in June 2022, Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September that year, delighted millions of viewers by appearing in a surprise comic sketch with Paddington to kick-start the Party In The Palace Platinum Jubilee concert.

Elizabeth II and the digitally animated character met for a chaotic cream tea at Buckingham Palace.

The monarch and the famous bear - both much loved British institutions - tapped out the beat of the We Will Rock You anthem together on china teacups using silver spoons as a unique way of getting the celebrations under way.
