Olivia Munn Addresses Blame for Aaron Rodgers’ Family Estrangement

Olivia Munn spoke out about her ex Aaron Rodgers – whom she dated from 2014 until 2017.

The 44-year-old actress, who is now married to John Mulaney, appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, and was asked if she watched Aaron’s documentary on Netflix.

‘I didn’t watch it. I knew what it was going to be,’ she told Dax on the Monday episode.

Adding: ‘It was going to push a narrative that during my time with them, never would ring true… There was this narrative that took hold because if you remember, back in the day, Jessica Simpson was hung out to dry for the Cowboys failures,’ referring to Jessica’s relationship with then-Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

At the time of Olivia and Aaron’s relationship, Aaron was in the midst of an estrangement with his parents Ed and Darla and brother Jordan – an estrangement which many believed was Olivia’s fault.

When Jessica dated Tony from 2007 until 2009, many fans unfairly blamed the singer when he didn’t play his best – but never said anything to her when he played well.

‘During the time I was with him, he had three hail marys, I think two NFC championships – not wins – but he made it into the NFC championship, which is very hard,’ Olivia said.

‘No one would want to talk about that. I didn’t get credit for any of the wins,’ she said.

Olivia said: ‘There’s this whole  big narrative that stayed with me for so many years, but there was just this dynamic in the family that had nothing to do with me. It became this whole big thing, and people were like, “I can’t with her, she’s keeping this family apart.”‘

‘People have speculated for many years what was the rift, and I know, but I’m not saying because it’s not my story to tell,’ Olivia revealed.

In 2024, Aaron finally cleared the decade-long rumor that she caused his estrangement with his family.

In an interview for the book Out of the Darkness: Mystery of Aaron Rodgers by Ian O’Connor, he said that his ‘deep-rooted’ family issues have ‘nothing to do with’ Olivia. 

Olivia said when he had made those statements, she was in the midst of her cancer treatment for breast cancer, and that she appreciated he said it. 

‘Thank God somebody had read it and said, “Oh wait! Aaron speaks. You’ve been asking for the longest time. This is the constant conversation. The man himself is saying it. They don’t want that answer… I was really grateful that he did that. Even if people didn’t want to take hold of that statement, it made me feel good that he it was said.’  

Aaron’s estrangement with his family was revealed in 2016 after his brother Jordan talked about it on his Bachelorette stint.

During Olivia’s relationship with Aaron, she also spoke candidly about their sex life , which his mom Darla ‘disapproved of’ due to her religious views; Aaron’s parents Darla and Ed pictured  

Soon after dad Ed confirmed the estrangement in an interview with The New York Times.

One year after Olivia and Aaron split, Olivia revealed on Andy Cohen Live that Aaron and his family didn’t speak for ‘months before we started dating.’

She said she supported him mending the relationship, and encouraged him to reach out to them via phone.

During Olivia’s relationship with Aaron, she also spoke candidly about their sex life, which his mom Darla ‘disapproved of’ due to her religious views. 

Andy had asked her if they abstained from sex on game days during the Plead the Fifth segment in December 2014.

‘No we don’t. Not on game day. There’s not a rule, but it just doesn’t happen because there’s other things to focus on.’ 

‘If he plays well, do you have sex after the game?’ Andy asked.

‘Depends on how late the game is. Usually I try to have sex as much as I can,’ she joked.

‘There’s no rules. It usually doesn’t happen because there’s a lot to do,’ she added.

‘I will say that all the good luck charms are on the field and in the stands so it has nothing to do with me.’

The couple, who wed in July 2024, also share three-year-old son Malcolm together.

Olivia has undergone five surgeries since being diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in both breasts in 2023 – including the full hysterectomy and full double mastectomy.

‘You fought so hard for this second baby too… and you’ve had this major surgery where you took out your ovaries, your uterus, had an egg retrieval. And that is it’s own journey,’ Today correspondent Savannah Guthrie noted.

Olivia went on to describe how ‘scary’ it was receiving the breast cancer diagnosis while also actively trying to expand her family with John.

‘We were planning on trying to have another baby. So at that point, I said, “I need to freeze more eggs.” I’d already frozen eggs in my 30s but I just didn’t know if they were any good because I didn’t turn them into embryos.

‘So, I said to John, I need to freeze more eggs or get more eggs out. And that’s going to put me at risk because I’m going to put more hormones in my body and that’s what feeds my cancer.

‘I need you to be supportive of this and you know it’s scary but he said, “Of course. Whatever you want to do I’ll support you.” So we went down the journey of getting more eggs and I really wanted a little girl.
