Nicole Kidman expressed that she uses fashion as ‘armor’ amid her shock divorce from Keith Urban following 19 years of marriage.
The 58-year-old actress — who recently announced major career news — opened up about the topic during a new interview with Vogue published on Wednesday.
It comes after it was revealed last week on Monday that the estranged couple have separated after tying the knot in 2006 — with the Oscar winner officially filing for divorce the next day.
Kidman discussed what fashion means to her and explained to the outlet, ‘Sometimes it’s armor.
‘Sometimes it’s playful, sometimes it’s sexy. It just depends on my mood. Sometimes it’s androgynous, sometimes it’s kind of, screw you.’
The Moulin Rouge star later said that she views fashion as ‘a parallel artistic life’ and added that there’s a ‘commitment to having that piece of art portrayed properly.’

The star has previously opened up about her connection to fashion and told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2023, ‘I’ve always been drawn to fashion, mainly classic lines with a twist; but edginess is something I don’t shy away from.
‘I love the artistry of fashion, and I’m very lucky, because I’ve been friends with a lot of designers since I was really young, when I first came to America and I was working.’
She continued, ‘Part of it was, oh my gosh, now I can access these designers who I only dreamed of wearing. I get to wear their clothes and be a part of their lives.’
Kidman recently attended Paris Fashion Week while stopping by the Chanel Spring/Summer 2026 runway show on Monday.
It was her second public appearance since her divorce news had come to light — and the actress was joined by her daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, whom she shares with Urban.
She was effortlessly chic in a long-sleeved white blouse as well as light blue trousers and black heels.
The Babygirl star admitted to being ‘nervous’ before attending the Chanel show and told Vogue while preparing for the event, ‘We’re getting ready for the Chanel show, I’m just very nervous.’
Kidman said that her two daughters would be accompanying her and added she was ‘excited for Matthieu [Blazy]because this is a big moment for him.

‘So, to be able to celebrate him with his first show with Chanel is the beginning of an incredible journey together. It’s exciting, right?’
It was also announced this week that Kidman will be returning as an ambassador for the luxurious brand.
‘I am thrilled to be joining Chanel as it begins its new chapter with Matthieu at the helm,’ she expressed in a statement.
‘As someone who has such an appreciation for Haute Couture, I am so looking forward to witnessing Matthieu’s vision for the oldest Haute Couture House still in operation and having the opportunity to wear what I know will be gorgeous creations.’
Kidman added, ‘Chanel has always been ahead of the curve, shining a smart and gracious light on women, and I am sure Matthieu will be no exception, just like Karl [Lagerfeld] did in his time.’
The actress also seemed to hint at her split from Urban in her recent Vogue profile — weeks before the world knew their marriage was over.
The star — who separated from the country singer earlier this summer — sat down for her cover story in late August.
At the time, the couple’s breakup hadn’t yet been made public, but even the interviewer sensed something had changed.

Journalist Wendell Steavenson, who conducted the conversation, wrote that he ‘guessed as much’ that Kidman and Urban were no longer together, noting the mood of the discussion — though he ‘didn’t want to pry.’
‘When I asked about how she felt now, in her 50s, I had expected to hear a nice trite response about the sagacity of age,’ Steavenson observed in the piece. ‘Instead Kidman was wry, rueful, unsure of herself.’
Kidman then offered a comment that, in hindsight, seemed to speak volumes: ‘How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?’ she said.
Although she avoided directly addressing her relationship status, Kidman did reflect on her summer spent surrounded by loved ones while filming Practical Magic 2 in London.
‘Going to Hyde Park and concerts, Glastonbury and Salisbury — so much summer fun — Evita, seeing theater, walking Hampstead Heath, swimming there,’ she told Vogue.
‘Went to Portugal, went to Greece, had my nieces and nephews around, lots of family: my sister, my best friend since I was 4, and her three children. A very tight group.’
Just weeks later on September 29, news broke that Kidman and Urban had quietly separated earlier in the summer.
The actress filed for divorce in Nashville the following day, citing irreconcilable differences.

Rumors have linked Urban to 25-year-old country star Maggie Baugh, though other insiders point to singer Kelsea Ballerini, 32; Urban seen with Baugh in 2024 in Austin
According to the filing, Kidman requested to be designated as the primary residential parent.
Now, sources told the Daily Mail that Urban has reportedly moved on with an unnamed female musician.
Rumors have linked him to 25-year-old country star Maggie Baugh, though other insiders point to singer Kelsea Ballerini, 32.
Meanwhile, Kidman and Urban were last publicly seen together in June this year at a FIFA World Cup match in Nashville, Tennessee.
The actress was reportedly left ‘blindsided’ by the separation.
A source stated, ‘Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour. There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce, but there is a world that they both live where neither of them are in it.
‘Keith and Nicole have been together for decades and there is a world which they can reconcile, but the way their pairing is now, it is not a couple.’
A separate source told People that the actress is ‘hurt’ and did not want their 19-year marriage to come to an end.
On Tuesday, Kidman shared her first Instagram message since splitting from Urban.

The star said she was ‘excited’ to be at the Chanel show in Paris with her daughters.
Sunday Rose, the elder of Kidman’s two children with the musician, was back at work just 24 hours later as French couture brand Christian Dior unveiled its latest collection at Paris Fashion Week.
The model walked the catwalk last week, before using her social media platform to praise the spring-summer presentation by sharing video footage of her appearance.
Captioning the post with a series of credits to the creative team behind her latest show, she wrote: ‘j’adore dior.’
