Nicole Kidman Embraces Matthieu Blazy’s Modern Chanel Debut

Just days since the shock announcement of her divorce, Nicole Kidman took a front-row seat at Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week show last night.

Dressed ultra-casually in an oversized white shirt and jeans, she was supported by her daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

The Oscar winner filed for divorce last week from their father, singer Keith Urban, after 19 years of marriage.

More than two decades after appearing in a campaign for Chanel’s No 5 fragrance, the 58-year-old actress was yesterday announced as one of the brand’s new ambassadors.

On Kidman’s right at the Grand Palais sat long-time ambassador, actress Vanessa Paradis, 52. Her daughter Lily-Rose Depp, 26, whose father is actor Johnny, was also in attendance, dressed in a navy peacoat and fishnet tights.

Also at the show were actresses Margot Robbie, 35, Penelope Cruz, 51, and Tilda Swinton, 64, as well as singer Gracie Abrams, 26, actor Pedro Pascal, 50, and models Kendall Jenner, 29, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 38.

Just as the front row was a mixture of brand ambassadors old and new, so, too, was Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection a judicious mix of heritage and modernity.

Announced as the new creative director of the fashion house in December, the French-Belgian designer, 41, held the same role at Bottega Veneta from 2021 to 2024.

It wasn’t so much a case of ‘out with the old, in with the new’ as ‘bring the old up to date with the needs of the modern woman’.

This meant that the classic boucle jacket was reworked in a wider shape, with drop shoulders and more generously proportioned arms. Skirts, rather than conforming to one length, ran the gamut from mini to midi, some with thigh splits, others with waterfall hems.

Most excitingly of all, it meant a deluge of new handbags. For if Blazy is good at designing clothes, what he really excels at is accessories – particularly bags, the cash cows of every luxury brand.

While Chanel’s classic quilted leather handbag is an undisputed status symbol so sought after that prices can be hiked by hundreds of pounds a year, it was still ripe for modernisation. Well, consider it modernised.

For spring 2026, the classic quilt was shrunken, elongated and supersized, its proportions tweaked to suit every need and preference. It looked slouchy in beige suede, zingy in metallic gold and ladylike in black and white monochrome.

Of the unprecedentedly high number of designers who made their debut as creative director of a womenswear collection this season – 12 in total – Blazy at Chanel was the most highly anticipated.

Founded by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel in 1910, Chanel has only had four creative directors in its 115-year history.

Karl Lagerfeld, who helmed the house for 36 years until his death in 2019 aged 85, is a tough act to follow. While armchair critics are harsher than they’ve ever been, it would be a churlish person indeed who didn’t agree that Paris-born Blazy delivered.

This was a wardrobe that served women’s needs as well as her wildest dreams. Besides, if you can’t get behind a designer who plays The Corrs and cheesy Nineties hit Rhythm Is A Dancer as his catwalk tracks, it’s very possible nothing will please you.
