Nicholas Hoult has revealed the ‘really tough’ moment that happened with Lily-Rose Depp on the set of their new movie, Nosferatu.
The actor, 35, and his French co-star, 25, play married couple Thomas and Ellen Hutter in the horror remake, which hit cinemas on January 1.
Appearing on Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill last week, the pair shared that they struggled on set because they were filming alongside more than five thousand real rats.
When asked if the rodents seen in the film were real or CGI, Nicholas confirmed: ‘No, they’re real.
‘I think in certain scenes when there’s really lots and lots – some in the background are like scanned in digital rats to do that but the majority of the time they are all real rats yeah.’
A shocked Jimmy then asked: ‘Oh my god. Are you both okay with rats?’

Lily replied: ‘I mean to be honest they aren’t my personal fave, but I love them from afar.
‘My character didn’t have to really reckon with any rats, Bill and Emma had to deal with more rats sort of close to the body;
‘Yeah, they had them crawling all over them and stuff,’ Nicholas added before Lily continued: ‘Yeah, that looked really tough.
‘I was in that scene with Emma where they had all the rats you know crawling all over their body and I remembered thinking I do not envy you now.’
Nicholas went on to add that because the rats were not house trained, their smell was ‘quite rich’.
The actor also revealed a massive diva moment he had on set, admitting he had to tell crew, ‘that’s not going to work for me’.
He said: ‘This is unrelated but the one time I’ve been a diva on set – was when there was a scene, I was meant to be eating ice cream and obviously I’m looking forward to it and I get there and take a bite of the ice cream, and it is lard mixed with food colouring and sugar.’
Laughing, Jimmy asked ‘No! Why would they do that to you?’

Nicholas explained: ‘It was fake ice cream it was absolutely disgusting, and my character was meant to eat a lot of this throughout the day.
‘And I was like “what is this?” and they were like “oh it’s lard we thought the ice cream might melt because of the set and the heat and everything” and I was like “no that’s not going to work for me.”
‘So, they went to Tesco’s round the corner and picked up a load of real ice cream for me so I could.
‘I was like that is absolutely foul I can’t eat that!’
Nosferatu is a remake of Robert Egger’s remake of the 1922 silent classic with Bill Skarsgård taking on the role of the bloodthirsty Count Orlok.
A synopsis for Nosferatu reveals it is a ‘Gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.’
The rest of the cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney.
‘Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie,’ the film’s director Robert Eggers told Empire. ‘And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while.’
He continued: ‘And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.’

The filmmaker, 40, raved that ‘Lily-Rose is absolutely phenomenal’ and this remake of the tale is ‘even more Ellen’s story than previous versions.’
Eggers noted that Bill, who is responsible for Lily’s terrified expression, was completely ‘transformed’ in his role.
‘I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he’s just… he’s not there,’ Eggers teased. ‘He felt like honouring who had come before him. It’s all very subtle.’
He continued: ‘But I think the main thing is that he’s even more a folk vampire.
‘In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we’ve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.’
