NHS Manager’s Salary Revealed Amid Controversy: Big Brother’s Kerry and Jenkin’s Financial Struggles

Big Brother’s Kerry has come under fire for making ‘tone deaf’ remarks about her salary during Sunday’s episode.

The NHS Manager, 40, shocked viewers during a conversation with model Zak, 28, food writer Henry, 25, and barman Jenkin, 25, as they discussed the average salaries of MPs compared to the UK population.

While sharing their thoughts on the politics, Kerry – who revealed that she had voted Conservative all her life  – said that MPs ‘don’t get paid that much’, while Henry added they get roughly £60,000 to £70,000 a year.

In fact, the basic annual salary for an MP is £86,584, UK Parliament reports, with MPs also receiving expenses to cover the costs of running an office, employing staff, having somewhere to live in London or their constituency, and travelling between Parliament and their constituency.

Zak then chimed in that the ‘average person makes £20,000 a year’ (although the Office for National Statistics states the median annual pay for full-time employees in 2022 was £33,000) which prompted Jenkin to share his salary struggles.

Jenkin, who now works as a barman, cleaner and a bingo caller in Wales, revealed: ‘I went between jobs and applied for benefits and I got £250 a month.’

Open mouthed, Kerry responded: ‘That’s really shocked me. I think I should stop moaning about being in the higher tax bracket because it p***es me off but then I hear that…’

Zak jumped in: ‘A lot of people would love to be in the higher tax bracket and have a little bit more money. Do you know how hard is to get to that higher bracket?’

Which prompted Kerry to respond: ‘I’m really proud of myself because it’s really hard in the NHS but I’ve started in Band Two 21 years ago I was on £7,800 a year…’

Kerry continued: ‘But I begrudge paying the higher tax bracket massively – I don’t think it’s fair.’

Those in the higher tax bracket pay 40 percent tax on incomes between £50,271 and £125,140.

As Head of Patient Experience in the NHS it’s expected that Kerry would be earning between £58,972 to £68,525 a year.

The housemates are all competing for the chance of winning the £100,000 prize of they are crowned series winner.

Kerry narrowly avoided being booted from the Big Brother house on Friday after facing the first public vote alongside make-up artist Farida – who was the first evictee.

Speaking out: Zak claimed the 'average person makes £20,000 a year' (although the Office for National Statistics states the median annual pay for full-time employees in 2022 was £33,000)

Shocked viewers were quick to to call out Kerry for moaning about paying more tax moments after Jenkin shared his struggle and her fellow housemates had explained that the average UK-based worker would not earn as much as her.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, fans penned: ‘I am HORRIFIED that Kerry is saying that paying more tax as a higher earner is unfair! That’s the point of progressive taxation. And to say that in front of Jenkin, who just said he had lived on £250/month. So tone deaf. #BBUK’;

‘kerry when the next labour government takes more taxes and funds her workplace #bbuk’; ‘Not Kerry moaning about being in the higher tax bracket when Jenkins just said he was on £250 a month #BBUK’; ‘Kerry on her higher tax bracket pay day whilst Jenkin struggles to budget his £62.50 a week’;

‘Kerry saying she’s voted Tory all her life, saying that politicians don’t earn that much, being shocked that the majority of people don’t earn more than 30k and moaning about being in the higher tax bracket. Shows how completely out of touch with the world some people are #bbuk’;

‘Nah sorry Kerry looked mighty smug saying she’s on a higher tax bracket in front of someone who said they’ve been on UC. #bbuk’; ‘Kerry complaining about tax literally seconds after Jenkin opened up about struggling on universal credit is absolutely abhorrent #BBUK’;

‘Kerry saying its not fair she’s in the higher tax bracket LITERALLY just after Jenkin admitted to the group he could only get £250… are votes to evict open yet? #BBUK’.

I like to do something different and I think this is the next challenge I want to conquer. I want to show people what pageant girls are really like and disprove a lot of stereotypes around them. I also show what it’s like being a woman who’s worked in male- dominated fields. I want to show that women are capable of doing anything they want.’

CHANELLE

76316529 12608729 image m 19 1696806176819

AGE: 29

PROFESSION: Dental therapist

FROM: Llanelli

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LIKELY TO BE NOMINATED FOR? ‘Probably just for being annoying. In Wales, we have this saying, “I’ll do it now in a minute.” So like, if I went to make food and I left a dish on the side, I have all good intentions of washing it but I’d be like, “I’ll do it now in a minute,” and it might be three hours later before I do it. So probably for silly stuff like that.’

AGE: 25

PROFESSION: Food writer

FROM: Cotswolds

HOW WOULD YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY DESCRIBE YOU? ‘I think they would say I’m particularly sociable and very chatty. I mean, I’ll be honest, my parents would definitely say I’m a bit of a snob but I take it as a compliment. I think it means you’ve got high standards and good taste. They’d say I was quite a peculiar child.’

KERRY

76317175 12608729 image m 45 1696807626084

AGE: 40

PROFESSION: NHS manager

FROM: Essex

WHAT MADE YOU APPLY TO BE A BIG BROTHER HOUSEMATE? ‘I love the programme. It is, for me, the ultimate reality TV show ever. I’ve got multiple sclerosis and so the reason why I never applied before is because I always saw those whacking great big stairs to get into the house. It just felt a little bit unachievable because for the first three years of my illness I was in a wheelchair. When I saw it was coming back and searching for real people from all walks of life, I thought, this is my year.’
