The franchise kicked off with 2004’s Saw, which hit theaters October 27, 2004 and helped put director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell on the map.
The film also put stars Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith on the map, who would return as John Kramer a.k.a. Jigsaw and Amanda Young in several sequels.
The first film was produced on a budget of just $1.2 million but pulled in $103 million worldwide ($56M domestic, $47M foreign) and kicked off an iconic franchise.
Saw II followed just a year later, with Darren Lynn Bousman replacing James Wan at the helm and co-writing the script with Whannell.
That pulled in $147 million ($87M domestic, $60M foreign) from just a $4 million budget, which lead to a new film hiting theaters every late October from 2006 to 2010, with all but Saw VI pulling in over $100M worldwide.
