A new theory about popular Australian animated children’s show Bluey has stirred up fans.
According to one eagle-eyed viewer, the animated series centred on a lovable family of blue heelers is set in the early 2000s.
And the same fan also claims that they have figured out the ‘ages’ of the characters based on story details.
Ever since the show first debuted in 2018, fans have wondered the age of Bandit, who is father to Bluey, seven, and Bingo, five.
Both of the children’s characters have only had one birthday on the show in six years, which has fans asking online for the exact year the show is set.
Sharing their thoughts to the Adult Bluey Facebook page, the viewer posted crucial ‘clues’ to support their theory after watching the season three finale Surprise.

‘So I’ve had an ongoing theory for a while now and the Surprise episode has made me lean more into it. I believe Bluey takes place during the early 2000s,’ the fan said in the post.
‘Reason 1: Bandit talks about growing up in the 80s as a kid.
‘He could have been born late 70s early 80s. That would put him in his mid/late 20s during the early 2000s. Which is average age for a dad with kids their age.
‘Reason 2: The technology. In this latest episode people talk about it jumps into the future but I believe it jumps to current time.’
‘All their electronics are current. They have quite a bit of what looks like Amazon products; an echo dot, an echo show, and a ring doorbell. They also have a robot vacuum (that’s not working all that great) and a digital picture frame.’
‘Cool theory,’ said one user on the thread, while another gushed: ‘Love this.’
Another Bluey fan agreed: ‘Absolutely agree! I am an 81 baby! Had my first baby in 2004 at 23. She turns 21 this year. So bandit would be about my age give or take a few years!!’
Meanwhile, other dedicated viewers were keen to punch holes in the theory.
Some fans have disputed the theory that the series is set in the early 2000s because the show, which is located in Brisbane, features an animated skyline of actual buildings that were constructed after 2017
‘Bandit is a doctor, it takes a while to get through the schooling for that. Being the case, they may have waited to have kids,’ one fan argued.
Another viewer took issue with the idea that Bluey’s mum and dad, Bandit and Chilli, were in their 20s.
‘I think Bandit and Chili are in their 40s, they have a more put together figured life out vibe than late 20s usually do. And we know Chili had some fertility problems so it would make sense they had children in their mid 30s instead of their 20s,’ another suggested.
‘The average age for a first time Mom in Australia is 29.8 which means there are definitely older parents out there,’ said another fan who disagreed with the theory.
A keen-eyed viewer also disputed the setting of the early 2000s because of a detail known to most Bluey fans.
‘The animated Brisbane sky line has buildings constructed post 2017,’ they posted on the thread.
Despite this, the question about Bandit’s age was resolved last October when the episode Browny Bear dropped.
In the short scene, Bandit’s driver’s license can be seen with the birth date October 25, 1978.

The children’s animated series has been riding high in the top ten shows streamed in the US for a massive 112 weeks.
The figures were compiled earlier this month by the Nielsen ratings, which tracks viewership in the US, according to the Comicbook website.
According to Nielsen’s survey, Bluey has been in the top ten shows streaming in the US since October 2022.
Bluey is broadcast in more than 60 countries, with all three seasons of the Emmy-award-winning cartoon available on ABC iview in Australia, Disney+ in the U.S. and select episodes on BBC iPlayer in the U.K.
Last month, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company announced they are bringing Bluey’s first-ever animated feature film to the big screen, which will be written and directed by the show’s creator Joe Brumm.
‘I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,’ Brumm said.
‘I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.’
