Netflix Teases Ryan Murphy’s True Crime Series “Monster: The Menendez Brothers”

A chilling teaser dropped this week for the upcoming Netflix anthology series Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story.

Co-created by Ryan Murphy, the first season of Monster was about the gay cannibal serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters in an acclaimed performance.

The show was furiously controversial, as social media users slammed the makers for earning money off the grief of the victims’ loved ones.

Now, for season two, the anthology has turned its attention to another infamous true crime story  – the Menendez brothers, who murdered their parents in 1989.

In the blood-curdling new sneak peek, Lyle and Erik can be seen stalking into their Beverly Hills mansion, shotguns in hand, ready for the kill.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch respectively play Lyle and Erik Menendez, the wealthy brothers at the center of the story.

Their parents, record executive Jose and socialite Kitty, whom they shot in their living room on the night of August 20, 1989, are played by Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny.

Their trials were televised and attracted a feverish media frenzy – the first court cases to become the type of TV sensation later epitomized by OJ Simpson.

The Menendez brothers put forward the ‘abuse excuse,’ alleging that they were molested and physically assaulted by their parents for years.

Along with the brothers themselves, one of the most notorious figures to emerge from the trial was their ruthless lawyer Leslie Abramson, who is played on the new show by Winning Time actress Ari Graynor.

Ultimately, the Menendez brothers were sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole – since when Lyle has been married twice and Erik once.

Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story bowed on Netflix in September 2022 and became a runaway hit, while sharply polarizing the audience.

Many viewers were scandalized by the show’s pulpy portrayal of the ‘Milwaukee Cannibal,’ which they regarded as disrespectful to the dead.

Compounding the controversy, the sister of the one of the victims publicly blasted the ‘harsh and careless’ series for ‘making money off of this tragedy’ out of ‘greed.’

Ryan struck a defiant tone, claiming he had attempted to contact the victims’ loved ones but never heard back from any of them.

‘We, over the course of the three-and-a-half years when we were writing it, working on it, we reached out to around 20 of the victims’ families and friends trying to get input, trying to talk to people, and not a single person responded to us in that process,’ insisted the Glee and American Horror Story creator.
