Mutya Buena Reveals Post-Natal Depression Led to Sugababes Exit, Keisha Buchanan Reflects on Their Struggles

Mutya Buena has revealed her post-natal depression contributed to her quitting the Sugababes.

The singer, 40, famously left the band at the height of their fame back in December 2005, a few months after the birth of her daughter Tahlia-May.

She was replaced by Amelle Berrabah and the group carried on before eventually splitting in 2009.

Original members Mutya, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy later reformed, touring and recording new music together.

Speaking to Glamour UK, Mutya admitted that looking back, she thinks she would have stayed in the group had she had more time to ‘chill’ away from work.

‘For me, when I left, it was at the time when I’d just had my daughter,’ she said.

The star added that had she had ‘enough time to chill for a couple of weeks,’ she ‘probably would have stayed in the group, but at that moment my headspace was all over the place.’

Keisha also spoke about how the various battles the group has faced – from several line-up changes to having to fight for the ownership of the Sugababes trademark, has brought them closer together.

‘Being able to go through those trenches, to constantly be told no, constantly told who we should be, to have those frustrations… we had every reason to give up, but then God was like, ‘It’s your time,” she said.

Siobhan left the Sugababes in 2001 after suffering with depression and feelings of isolation. She was replaced with Heidi Range.

‘I don’t put myself in that headspace any more, but I have to say I’ve never regretted my decision. Your life journey is your life journey,’ she said.

When it came time for the original members to reunite in 2010, Siobhan added: ‘We wanted to feel confident that we were gonna approach each other with the sensitivity that the situation needed when we talk about childhood trauma like that.

‘We needed to know that we had each other’s back.’

Siobhan also shared how the band now approach everything they do with positive energy.

‘It’s the essence of everything. We owe it to each other and we owe it to ourselves. The kind of success we’re having now, it does heal,’ she said.

‘You shouldn’t need that, but it does heal the wounds. It does. And the thing that I’ve taken from the last four years, the thing that I enjoy the most, is creating joyful moments for the audience.

‘I get everything out of that, I love it. Look at them having a wild old time – and we did that!’

Reflecting on their time in the music industry, Mutya added: ‘We’ve really worked our a***s off throughout the years and been really humble about it as well.

‘We’ve stuck through so much shit that’s been said about us. We could have all quit at different times, but we decided to stick together.’

GLAMOUR Women of The Year will take place in London on 30th October.
