Move over, M! Amazon wants to put Barbie’s producers in charge of the Bond series

Amazon’s takeover of the James Bond franchise could see the British super-spy’s future being controlled by the team behind the hit movie Barbie.

Sources have told The Mail on Sunday that Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, want Amy Pascal and David Heyman, the producers of the 2023 blockbuster movie, to ‘steer the future’ of 007.

Hollywood was rocked last week when Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and her brother Michael G Wilson revealed they had handed over creative control of the £7.5 billion franchise to Amazon in a $1 billion deal.

Pascal – who once ran Sony Pictures and was behind hits including Spider-Man: Homecoming and Little Women – was involved in the development of the Barbie script.

Heyman is best known as the producer of all eight Harry Potter films.

A source said: ‘There are no two more respected producers in Hollywood. They took Barbie from a concept about a plastic doll and turned it into global box office gold, which ended up taking $1.4 billion. It’s early days but they are the people Amazon want to steer the future of James Bond.’

Fans of Bond have been concerned that the franchise could be ‘destroyed’ by Amazon.

One fan said: ‘How can someone like Jeff Bezos be put in charge of a British icon? He’s going to ruin it and spin-off Bond into TV shows and cheap merchandising.’

The last film was No Time To Die in 2021, Daniel Craig’s fifth and final outing as Bond, which saw the character die at the end.

The source added: ‘Everyone knows Bond needs a total reboot.

‘Bezos is a huge fan of Bond and doesn’t want to mess it up. Having said that, he does want to make money. It is going to take a team of skilled professionals to keep fans and the moneymen happy.’
