Missy Elliott has revealed she is finally allowing her mother, Patricia, to watch her perform live – having dissuaded her for decades over fears she wouldn’t appreciate her bad language.
The hip-hop star, 52, will make history on Friday when she becomes the first-ever female rapper to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Grammy-winning musician sheepishly admitted to Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts that despite previously shying away from having her Christian mom in the audience, she has made an exception in celebration of her milestone moment.
‘My mother has never seen me perform before,’ she explained on Thursday’s episode. ‘She’s seen me on TV but she has never been to a show. I had some little words I didn’t ever want her to hear. She’s coming for the first time.’

Back in May, it was confirmed that Missy, real name Melissa Arnette Elliott, was becoming the first female rapper inductee to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Reflecting on the honor, she told Robin that ‘words cannot describe’ how she felt about the achievement.
‘It just hasn’t clicked. When you are in the hip hop world, it seems so far out of reach,’ the Work It hitmaker explained.
‘And it being the 50th year of hip hop anniversary. Just the whole thing, it adds layers.
‘No matter what people say, the hip hop world is something special and unique.’
When the news was first announced, Missy expressed her excitement and gratitude about the latest milestone in her storied career.
‘I want to say this is HUGE not for just me but all my Sisters in HIPHOP this door is now OPEN to showcase the hard work & what many of us contribute to MUSIC,’ she tweeted. ‘I have cried all morning because I am GRATEFUL thank you @rockhall & all on the committee & Supafriends.’
She added that she couldn’t ‘stop crying,’ noting: ‘I am from Portsmouth Virginia aka P-Town.. #757 to 804 I send my love … You day dream of these moments but today it’s Real … VA 2 up 2 down the 7 Cities all my folk I am GRATEFUL.’

The celebrated music artist continued: ‘It’s times I have gotten on line & seen your irrelevant your a flop your washed up & it would crush me at times,’ she tweeted. ‘BUT God you made me STRONG I kept going & you allowed my decades of WORK to SPEAK 4 itself.’
The Rain performer said she was ‘humbled’ by the honor, adding: ‘Thank you all my Supporters… I LOVE YOU.’
The Lose Control singer added: ‘If I miss some of yalls tweets please forgive me it’s a lot to see but I do want to say Thank You to my Fans (Supafriends) my Peers/Radio/Dj’s/Bloggers & again @rockhall I am Thankful #RockHall2023 #VA #757.’
The music veteran, who has also written and produced for artists including the late Aaliyah and Diddy, was lauded by peers from Ciara to Janet Jackson.
‘I’m SO proud of you sis!!!!’ Jackson tweeted, while Ciara said: ‘Congratulations to my sis @MissyElliott on being inducted into the @rockhall!! You deserve it all! Will never stop thanking you for the inspiration you give us all! I love you so much!’

Other artists who will be inducted this year include Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, Rage Against The Machine and the Spinners.
Elsewhere, music legend Chaka Khan will receive the Musical Excellence Award.
Missy previously received a star on the Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, with her pals, Lizzo and Ciara, serving as guest speakers at the 2021 ceremony.
Prior to that, she became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019.
This week she featured in a Mean Girls inspired skit for Walmart, standing in place of Coach Carr in a twist on the famous sex education scene from the 2004 movie.
Lecturing about the new Black Friday deals, she said: ‘If you have Walmart Plus, you will get three hour early access to Black Friday deals.’
She added ‘deals’ before turning to her chalkboard and spelling it out loud, much like Coach Carr did in the original film.
