Mindy Kaling recalls ‘heartbreaking’ exchange between her ex B.J. Novak and daughter Katherine

Mindy Kaling recalled a ‘heartbreaking’ exchange she recently witnessed between her seven-year-old daughter Katherine and her ex-boyfriend B.J. Novak, who’s the godfather of all three of her children.

The 45-year-old Vengeance director-star was one of five guests attending the ‘low-key’ first birthday party of the 45-year-old Running Point co-creator’s youngest daughter Anne at her father Avu Chokalingam’s LA house on Monday night.

In honor of the ‘cheap’ festivities, Mindy (born Vera Chokalingam) donned an Elmo costume she bought from Amazon back in 2018, a tradition which her four-year-old son Spencer has become ‘clearly indifferent’ to.

‘There was a chilling moment with their godfather B.J.,’ Kaling – who employs a full-time nanny and two assistants – explained on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

‘[Katherine] turned to B.J. and said, ” Wait is Mom Elmo?” And it’s one of those things where he was like, “Okay there’s a lot of other things you’re going to learn about, but I think I should just be upfront with you. 

“You’re seven. You’re in first grade.” And he’s like, “Yeah yeah, kid she’s Elmo.” And it was, like, a little heartbreaking for her I think.’

However, the six-time Emmy nominee’s eldest child ‘definitely does not want the Tooth Fairy ruined because of how lucrative it is’ aka $10 per tooth.

Last week, Mindy made history as first South Asian woman to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Novak – who’s an ‘important and integral’ part of her family – was right by her side as usual.

‘Mindy respects and understands [fame] in a very intuitive way because in addition to being a brilliant and wildly successful showrunner, an incredible mother of three, a deep and caring daughter and friend and mentor to so many,’ the five-time Emmy nominee gushed in his speech.

‘You’d be on the walk of talent if they had one. You’d be on the walk of friendship. You’d be on the walk of compassionate parenthood, but let’s face it all of these would be terrible field trips, so here you are instead, very deservedly, a person who means so much to so many on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.’

Kaling and B.J. (born Benjamin Joseph) – who dated on/off between 2005-2013 – famously wrote and starred as Dunder Mifflin love interests Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard on NBC’s mockumentary sitcom The Office, which aired for nine seasons spanning 2005-2013.

Greg Daniels’ critically-acclaimed show was a remake of BBC Two’s iconic series of the same name co-created by and starring Ricky Gervais, which aired for two seasons spanning 2002-2003.

For her 11th appearance on the CBS talk show, the Sex Lives of College Girls co-creator flaunted her substantial weight loss (rumored to be the result of the trendy diabetic drug Ozempic) in a black Nadine Merabi cocktail dress selected by stylist Erin Walsh.

Mindy was on Kimmel to promote the 10-episode basketball comedy Running Point starring Kate Hudson – premiering Thursday on Netflix – which she co-created.

Running Point – also starring Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, and Chet Hanks – currently has a 67% critic approval rating (out of six reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kaling also produced Adam J. Graves’ 28-minute child labor film Anuja, which will compete for the best live action short trophy at the 97th Academy Awards this Sunday on ABC.
