Michelle Trachtenberg’s boyfriend Jay Cohen, 63, was a ‘huge support’ to her before her shocking death at 39

Michelle Trachtenberg spent time with her boyfriend agent Jay Cohen ahead of her death.

Cohen, 63, who was Michelle’s agent at the the Gersh Agency, started dating the Gossip Girl actress in 2019.

‘She was still together with her boyfriend, whom she spoke of highly and lovingly,’ a source told Us Weekly. ‘They seemed to have a wonderful relationship.’

Cohen was ‘a huge support system’ for Trachtenberg the outlet added.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress was found unresponsive in her New York City apartment on February 26 by her mother.

Her family has opted against an autopsy due to religious reasons so her exact cause of death will never be known.

Michelle wished Cohen a happy Valentine’s Day earlier this month, writing on Instagram, ‘Happy Valentine’s Day to the man who sits still long enough for me to paint his face’, with a picture of the couple dressed as Jekyll and Hyde for Halloween.

She had undergone a liver transplant months before her sudden death.

The Gossip Girl star didn’t talk about her health publicly but she needed the liver transplant after battling alcohol-related health issues and ‘may have been experiencing complications’ prior to her death.

A restaurant worker revealed to DailyMail.com that Trachtenberg was so sick during her final outing that she could barely walk down a flight of restaurant stairs.

Police told DailyMail.com that there is no foul play suspected in her death.

The star’s gaunt appearance stunned staff at Sartiano’s restaurant in SoHo, New York.

It was Thursday February 20th, less than a week before the Harriet the Spy star was found dead.

‘She looked really unwell, just like very sickly,’ a worker said on Wednesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

‘She was thin, like tiny, she couldn’t walk down the stairs. She was not in a great mood, it wasn’t the best impression.’

Trachtenberg’s spokesman told DailyMail.com: ‘It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away. The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.’

Police said there is no foul play suspected in her death.

‘On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at approximately 0801 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided individual at 1 Columbus Place, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct,’ police said in a statement.

‘Upon arrival, officers observed a 39-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the victim deceased.

‘Criminality is not suspected. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.’

Trachtenberg was best known for her work as Buffy’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) younger sister Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 2000-2003.

She also had a recurring role as ‘The Witch of the Upper East Side’ Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl alongside Blake Lively and Leighton Meester from 2008-2012.

In recent years Trachtenberg had sparked concern for her health after sharing troubling social media posts in which she looked frail.

In the wake of her death, her former Gossip Girl co-star Ed Westwick shared a poignant throwback of the star on the show, captioned: ‘So sad to hear of the passing of Michelle Trachtenberg, sending prayers.’

Her Harriet The Spy co-star Rosie O’Donnell mourned the ‘heartbreaking’ loss of Trachtenberg in a statement, saying: ‘I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped.’

In 2023 Michelle reprised her role in two episodes of the second (and final) season of HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot.
