It comes after Michael stayed at a special £4,000-per-week weight loss clinic to lose more than two stone but has since put it back on and developed a fear of apples in the process.

He travelled to Austria in a bid to get himself in better shape and, after undergoing various tests, was told he should avoid eating apples.

He claims he is now scared to eat the fruit, which he was told would make him ‘lethargic’ and ‘confused’.

But, despite successfully slimming down, he is struggling to keep the weight off now he’s back in the UK because his wife Kitty prefers ‘teddy bear Michael’.

He told The Sun: ‘I went to this place called the Mayr Clinic and lost quite a bit of weight, which I kept off for a little while.

‘It was a week of pain and they did all these tests on me, put little probes on the end of my tongue and told me I shouldn’t eat apples.

‘Apparently apples will make me very lethargic and confused in my brain. It’s the only thing I’ve taken from it, really.’

He added that he’s now put the weight he lost back on and has also developed a fear of apples.

Michael went on to say his wife doesn’t like him losing weight, so he doesn’t always feel motivated to do so.

He joked it would be much easier to shift the pounds if ‘she was quite rude to me about my weight’.

The funnyman said: ‘She wants teddy bear Michael, not racing snake Michael, the man she first met.

‘She was like, “Who is this? Who is this insanely hot, chiselled man in front of me?” She didn’t like it. So that was quite demotivating.’

Move over, Michael McIntyre. Shut your mouth, Lee Mack. Gag mer- chant Alan Sugar is in the house, and he’s got them rolling in the aisles.

But either I’ve suffered a sense of humour failure or he’s surrounded by sycophants, because although his lackeys were splitting their sides on The Apprentice (BBC1), the good lord’s scripted ad libs seemed even more dire than usual.

This year’s crop of exceptional incompetents were in for an ear-drubbing after the annual treasure hunt. Previous intakes have been sent as far afield as Dubai, but cash must be tight in Sugar Towers during this cost-of-living crisis because the two teams of twerps had a day trip to Jersey instead.

As usual, they were challenged to spend as little as possible on a shopping list of puzzles that included Jersey wonders (a sort of knotted doughnut), shucked oysters (that is, ones that were open) and a knitted jersey with an anchor design.

One team walked straight past a jersey on a market stall, three times. ‘Never mind Jersey wonders,’ chortled Lord S, ‘Stevie Wonder would have noticed that.’

Hang on, I need a splint to bind my aching ribs.

But his chuckle-ometer hit maximum when he learned that team lieutenant Noor let one of the juniors, Paul, do the negotiating for the oysters. ‘That was very unshellfish of you,’ Alan told her.

To his right, Baroness Karren Brady threw back her head and brayed. To his left, Tim Campbell MBE slowly slid off his chair in helpless hilarity.

What wit. What timing. What’s on after this?

Despite such an unbeatable explosion of laughter, the inquest dragged on. Both team leaders, Raj and Jack, had been determined to haggle aggressively — one expected a discount of 50 per cent, the other 75 per cent. The boss called one of them a ‘brain surgeon’ and decided they must have attended the same ‘school of silliness’.

At the end, he called in seven candidates for expulsion, instead of the usual three. It’s just a shame they weren’t all kicked out. The end of this creaking, servile nonsense can’t come soon enough.

While the BBC was airing a load of tosh, a truly appalling scandal was being exposed in Gymnastics: A Culture Of Abuse? (ITV1).

Following a two-year inquiry into bullying and predatory sexual behaviour by British Gymnastics coaches, this documentary pulled no punches. The author of the report, Anne Whyte KC, said that intimidation and molestation of children were so widespread that ‘abuse was normalised’.

The sickening behaviour of some coaches has been an open secret in the sport for decades. One whistleblower described how he reported a trainer named David Schadek to the authorities for plying an underage girl with alcohol. The response was dismissive: ‘That’s up to him. Don’t get involved.’

Schadek was eventually jailed for sexual assault… but not until 20 years later.

Victim Nikki O’Donnell described how she was groomed and abused by her coach, former Olympian Stan Wild, before finally building up the courage to tell him to leave her alone — whereupon he barred her from his gym.

Wild has now been suspended from the sport, but denies the allegations and has not been charged with any criminal offence. Nikki has had to live with trauma and its corrosive effects: by 16, she was an alcoholic with a life-threatening eating disorder.

Though this programme represents a good start, by all accounts there continues to be a horrific undercurrent of child abuse in gymnastics.

‘Today, right now in a gym,’ said coach Carlton Webster, ‘some kid is being verbally abused, physically abused — God forbid it, sexually abused. Today. Fact.’

Eric, who embarked on a tour in October last year, will be returning to the stage in April – after his album releases on March 29.

Unexpected guest’s incredible performance on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show leaves BBC viewers in tears

BBC viewers couldn’t hold back their tears as they watching unexpected guest Alfie perform on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on Saturday night.

The comedian and presenter, 47, explained to fans that Alfie, 24, is often seen busking but it’s not always easy for him after being diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age.

During the episode, Alfie had no idea he was appearing on stage with Michael for his show as he believed he was testing out a football game centre with a friend.

After meeting his idol Frank Lampard and releasing where he really was, Michael explained he’d have the chance to sing in front of 2,000 people.

At the end of the show, Alfie performed his own rendition of Born Free which received a standing ovation from the audience.

‘I think for me, you can make a real big change when we put positive energy into the world, I think that’s what we should all be here to do tonight.’

Earlier on the show, TV star Bradley Walsh was featured in one segment where Michael woke him up in the middle of the night for his The Midnight Gameshow.

During the segment where Michael barged into The Chase presenter’s, 63, hotel room at 1am, he asked the him a set of questions which had previously featured on his ITV quiz show.

During the segment where Michael barged into Bradley’s hotel room at 1am, he asked the TV presenter a set of questions which had previously featured on The Chase.

It comes after earlier this week viewers of The Chase were left in complete shock after a contestant made history when they received a jaw-dropping offer.

Four new hopefuls took on Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis, 43, on Friday’s episode of the gameshow.

The first player, Kim, accumulated £5,000 in her cash builder round, however viewers were left gobsmacked when Darragh presented her with an eye-watering six-figure cash offer.

If Kim was to go high, she could have potentially brought £100,000 for her team.

Host of the popular ITV quiz show Bradley and viewers at home were taken aback by the extraordinary sum, which Darragh noted as the ‘highest offer ever’ for a player.

He then went on to say that any other offer thereafter would be lower.

Although Kim seemed tempted, she ultimately played it safe, choosing not to go it and keeping her initial £5,000.

Fans took to social media, to share their thoughts on the surprising turn of events – not believing the huge offer or why Kim turned it down.

One chimed: ‘What are you doing! Take the £100k!’

Another said: ‘100k first offer’ followed by a serious of mind blown emojis.

Darragh went on to defeat player two, Owen, and player three, Georgina.

The final player, Perry, added an extra twist to the show by opting for the higher offer of £88,000.

Fans were flabbergasted when Perry successfully advanced to the final, defying all expectations.

Despite the team’s unexpected success, it was short-lived as in the final chase, Perry and Georgina answered 14 questions between them, but Darragh managed to defeat them with just seconds to spare.

It’s not the first time the ITV gameshow – which has been running since 2009 – has made history after ‘the one question shootout’ took place earlier this year.

The show features a total of six Chasers: Mark Labbett, Anne Hegerty, Jenny Ryan, Paul Sinha, Darragh Ennis, and Shaun Wallace.

The programme has spawned The Chase: Celebrity Special, The Family Chase, and Beat The Chasers, as well as international remakes.

    Calll The Midwife

    Rating:

    Michael McIntyre’s Big Show

    Rating:

Stick-in-the-muds are usually right. We’re told to ’embrace change’ and ‘move forwards’, but the thing about moving forwards is you can never see where it will end.

The redoubtable Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) pulls a face at the mention of ‘progress’ like a woman who has found a kipper in the washing basket — disgusted, cross and incredulous all at once.

She confronted the naive and idealistic Pupil Midwife Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry), in Call The Midwife (BBC1), and gave her a piece of her mind.

The trainee wanted to hand out leaflets, campaigning for better pay. ‘As far as I’m concerned,’ huffed Nurse Crane, ‘nursing is a calling. Not a career. And any suggestion that we are financially motivated will undermine our patients’ trust in us.’

What would she make, half a century later, of nurses on picket lines or junior doctors staging cynical walk-outs to undermine the government, playing politics at the expense of patients’ lives? It would break her heart.

There’s a contradiction at the core of Call The Midwife. Writer Heidi Thomas has progressive instincts, a certainty that better medicines and social care will improve the world by helping to eradicate disease and poverty.

But with fierce honesty, the series also shows that many well-intentioned changes only make life worse. Slum clearance, a theme of recent episodes, can leave people homeless, and high-rise concrete complexes built on the cheap are prone to many dangers.

This time, one storyline centred on black mould caused by damp in the walls, still a plague today.

The best solution Thomas can offer is a call to community spirit — one of the priceless British traditions that ’embracing change’ and ‘moving forwards’ has sadly stripped away.

Now in its 13th year, Call The Midwife has seen so many varieties of medical crisis that only the improbable ones remain.

That leaves it at risk of becoming a Doc Martin pastiche, where a patient’s mild symptoms accelerate into near-fatal complications, and only the diagnosis of an exceptionally rare disease can save them.

Dr Turner, played by Patrick McGann (Heidi’s real-life husband), saved one woman by recognising the signs of porphyria.

If he ever fancies taking over Doc Martin’s old practice in Portwenn, he can test himself on even stranger ailments: Kawasaki disease, birdshot chorioretinopathy and Guillaume Barré neuropathology were among the oddities identified in the Cornish population.

Chef Tom Kerridge was serving up dishes with equally peculiar names, as Michael McIntyre’s Big Show (BBC1) returned for a new run.

In one of the comedian’s madly convoluted pranks, Michael raided the home of ardent home cook Shaun, to steal a few of his many pre-cooked meals from the freezers.

Shaun’s partner Darren, who was privy to the joke, treated him to a meal at Kerridge’s Michelin starred restaurant in London’s Corinthia hotel, where they sampled taster dishes such as ‘Toulouse sausage cassoulet’ and ‘DIY surprise’ — concoctions remade from Shaun’s own food and served to resemble daintily pretentious nouvelle cuisine.

There’s a streak of cruelty in all pranks, and the more complicated the set-up, the more the sting will hurt.

Shaun took it in good part but I felt sorry for him as he tucked unawares into his own reheated lasagne, and blurted: ‘Horrible! Like it’s been made badly on purpose.’

The gags are funnier when celebs are the victims. Dermot O’Leary’s list of phone contacts reveals he knows everyone in the business, which is no shock, and former Spandau Ballet star Tony Hadley could hardly sing for laughing at the trick played on him. Sheer Gold!
