has revealed the sobering results of his most recent skin cancer surgery.

The Australian cricket icon, 45, took to Instagram on Friday, sharing a photo that showed him sitting, eyes closed, at his kitchen bench.

There was a nasty wound that ran along the bridge of his nose, complete with a raft of stitches – after undergoing the latest skin cancer treatment the day before.

Michael, who was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2006, said the post was a timely reminder, given that May was Skin Cancer Awareness Month in Australia.

'Today is the start of Skin Cancer Awareness Month. No better time to go and get your skin checked,' he captioned his post.

'Yesterday, I had another cancer removed from my face. Never a nice feeling, but consistent check-ups allow me to have these removed before it’s too late.'

Michael's post was met with a flurry of well-wishes and praise from friends and followers.

Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi commented: 'Stay safe my friend. Sorry you are going thru this again. Big big hug.'

Michael's former teammate Damien also chimed in with a similar message: 'Well done mate. Glad all okay.'

The Australian Skin Cancer Foundation also added its praise for the sporting legend.

'Powerful mate. This is exactly why early detection saves lives. Thank you for using your voice to remind Australians and the world that a simple skin check can make the difference. Proud to stand with you,' they wrote.

Michael took to Instagram on Thursday to reveal that he had undergone another skin cancer procedure.

He posted a picture of himself at the Woollahra Clinic with Dr Bish Soliman, following up with the update that he had another melanoma removed.  The story post captioned, 'Just had another skin cancer removed from my face.

'Thank you @DrBishSoliman, @TheWoollahraClinic for looking after me #GETYOURSKINCHECKED.'

scares had left him in fear that he might not be around for his daughter, Kelsey Lee.

'It does scare me. I am a dad – I don't want to go anywhere,' he said. 'The most important thing in the world is making sure I help my seven-year-old daughter and I guess set a good example for her.'

The sportsman blamed his battle with skin cancers on spending long hours in the sun as a cricketer.

'Imagine fielding all day in , out there for eight hours in the sun, a lot of the guys are wearing the baggy green cap so you are not protecting your ears or your face,' he told the publication.

'You've got short-sleeved shirts, so your arms and the tops of your hands (are exposed).
