Meryl Streep Stumbles in Heels While Filming Devil Wears Prada 2

It’s exactly the kind of thing that all-controlling fashion boss Miranda Priestly would never have allowed to happen.

But Meryl Streep – who is returning to play the iconic role in Devil Wears Prada 2 – was able to see the funny side after taking a tumble on stairs in a billowing scarlet gown and towering heels.

The blunder befell the triple Oscar-winner, 76, during filming at New York’s Museum of Natural History for the sequel of the 2006 film, set in the cut-throat world of the glamorous Runway magazine.

Meryl commanded attention in the glamorous dramatic red dress as she joined co-star Stanley Tucci, who is returning as fashion authority Nigel.

The pair waved to the crowd of photographers lining the red carpet as they made their way up the stairs, recreating Runway’s version of the Met Gala.

However minutes later, the Mamma Mia! star tripped and fell to the ground but luckily saw the funny side laughing off the blunder with Stanley before he kindly gave her a helping hand up.

Earlier in the day, Meryl had carried out a practice run on the stairs wearing a pair of wedged sandals before attempting the Met Gala-inspired scene in full costume, complete with red stacked heels.

The actress, despite not being in character at the time, looked every bit the fashion icon in a beige trench layered over a black-and-white checked blouse.

Like many celebrities before her, she is not the first star to take a tumble as Gigi Hadid tripped on the Met Gala stairs in 2021, and US singer Janelle Monae took a tumble in 2024.

The sequel to the film based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, who worked at Vogue under Anna Wintour, will see Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt reprise their roles – but in a rapidly- changing media landscape.

Elsewhere during the scene, Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley, who is joining the cast, looked sensational in a show-stopping black mesh glittering number.

David Frankel – who directed the first 2006 movie – is returning as director on the sequel as well.

Aside from Anne, Emily, Stanley and Meryl, other stars joining the original cast in the second movie include Simone Lucy Liu, Pauline Chalamet, Kenneth Branagh, Tracie Thomas, B.J. Novak and Justin Theroux are other cast members in the project.

The premise: ‘Follows Miranda Priestly’s struggle against Emily Charlton, her former assistant turned rival executive, as they compete for advertising revenue amidst declining print media while Miranda nears retirement,’ per IMDB.

The Devil Wears Prada was a critical success and raked in $326.7 million in the box office on a budget of around $35-$41 million.

It also garnered two Oscar nominations, such as Best Actress for Meryl Streep. Other nods included five BAFTAs and three Golden Globes – with Streep winning for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

During an interview with WWD, Anne – who is also set to star in The Princess Diaries 3 – opened up about reprising previous roles.

‘I was so beautifully cared for on both of those films,’ she recalled, while adding that she had been young when making both The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries.

‘I was so guided and looked after and cared for by the communities that made both of those films in particular, each of their directors, Garry Marshall and David Frankel.’

She added: ‘I’m so excited that now I can do that for other people, that now I have the knowledge and the experience and the confidence to take care of other people on sets in which I’m looked at as a leader.’
