Melbourne Coldplay fans got a surprise on Thursday night when a very unlikely star made a shock cameo.
The band’s second performance at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium got a dose of ’80s Hollywood when actor Ralph Macchio took to the stage.
Macchio, 62, is best known for playing the character Daniel LaRusso in the iconic ’80s action film series The Karate Kid and most recently reprised the iconic role in the Netflix spinoff series Cobra Kai.
A video uploaded to the ColdplayUK X fan account showed the actor on stage with the UK hitmakers, performing the song, Karate Kid, from the band’s latest album Moon Music.
However, Macchio was just lip-synching to Chris Martin’s vocals, with the X account revealing the actor was on stage to shoot a video for the song.
Looking casual in a pair of jeans, black graphic T-shirt and unbuttoned chambray shirt, the actor confidently stepped up to the mic to play his part, before embracing singer Chris Martin at the song’s conclusion.
Macchio starred in three Karate Kid movies, released in 1984, 1986, and 1989.
The first film tells the story of a teenage who is taught martial arts by wise building superintendent Mr Miyagi to overcome a gang of karate bullies.

It’s not the first time the Yellow hitmakers have welcomed an ’80s acting icon on stage.
During their headlining set at the Glastonbury festival in June, Back to The Future star Michael J Fox joined the band, shocking the 100,000-strong crowd.
The actor, who is battling Parkinson’s, appeared on stage in his wheelchair to play the guitar during Fix You and Humankind.

Macchio’s surprise cameo comes after an unfortunate start to Coldplay’s Aussie tour.
The band’s first Melbourne show was derailed on Wednesday night after one band member suffered a health emergency.
In a career first, lead singer Chris Martin announced the band would be playing their first show in Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium without bassist Guy Berryman after he was struck down by an illness.
During the concert, Chris said: ‘We will have a slightly different show and we’ll do our best to make it amazing because we are in Melbourne with all you beautiful people.’

‘If you see some mistakes and problems, it’s because we don’t have our bass player. You won’t see Guy tonight because he is vomiting,’ the singer added.
Taking to Instagram after the show on Wednesday night, the band thanked their fans for understanding.
‘Tonight was the first time in our band’s history that we’ve played a show without all four members onstage.
‘Guy was taken ill unexpectedly just before the show. Thank you for carrying us through it.’
The bassist was back on stage with the band on Thursday night.
