Melanie Blatt reveals pressures to get abortions during All Saints’ peak fame.

All Saints singer Melanie Blatt has recalled her bosses’ shocking reactions to finding out her and Nicole Appleton were pregnant during their time in the group.

The star, 50, speaks candidly in the new documentary GirlBands Forever where she lays bare the reality of life in a top group in the nineties.

She tells how when she informed managers that she and bandmate Nicole were expecting, they were both told to abort their babies as they should be focusing on the success of the band.

Melanie welcomed the child with her then partner, Stuart Zender, the bassist for band Jamiroquai.

Melanie, 50, explains in the show, The Sun reports: ‘I hadn’t been with my partner for very long, it was definitely a bit of a surprise It wasn’t people congratulating us. It was more like this look of dread and worry and the realisation that things are going to change.

‘We flew to LA and at the airport LAX our manager, he was behind us, was telling us to abort our babies.’

She added that her bosses told them they were ‘going to ruin everything’ and ‘it was the end of the band’.

At the time Nicole chose to have an abortion after falling pregnant with her then boyfriend Robbie Williams due to pressure from the record company.

The scenes were dramatised in Robbie’s biopic Better Man which was released last year.

Robbie and Nicole are on good terms today and she attended the premiere of the film in Leicester Square last year.

According to The Sun, the singer performed his song She’s The One at the afterparty and dedicated it to Nicole.

Both Robbie and Nicole reportedly approved of the script and he praised her at the afterparty, where his wife Ayda Field was also in attendance.

In the film, Robbie’s need for fame is seen interfering with his relationship with Nicole as he leaves her at an All Saints party to go on a night out with Liam Gallagher, who would later marry and divorce Nicole.

They are also seen decorating a nursery together in the film but Nicole is then later seen visiting an abortion clinic.

‘Nicole Appleton is f**king brave for allowing us to tell that bit of the story,’ he said as he led the intimate crowd in round of applause before launching into his hit song She’s The One.

Speaking to Hello! before the premiere, Robbie explained how he had invited Nicole to an early screening, before admitting: ‘The most difficult bit is watching Nicole and what we went through because she was instructed to get rid of our baby…’

The singer added: ‘I didn’t make her do that – but I was a f****** awful boyfriend, like, really awful, and I was in the height of my addiction and alcoholism.

‘And it breaks my heart every time I watch it because she’s a complete angel, and there’s still shame attached to who I was then.’

Robbie added that he called her as soon as she left the screening and both of them shed tears before gushing that he was looking forward to ‘giving her a hug’ at Wednesday’s premiere.

Nicole revealed her side of the relationship and breakup in her 2002 autobiography Together, writing how she fell pregnant with Robbie’s baby but after pressure from All Saints’ record company she had an abortion.

Robbie backed his ex’s decision to write about the abortion in her autobiography but later admitted reliving it had ‘torn him apart’.

‘I was completely behind her… If there’s something that’s so deep-rooted within yourself that you feel it would feel better to you that you exorcised it and got it off your chest, because secrets can make you sick and secrets can make you feel terrible… then I’m completely behind her,’ he previously told the Daily Mail.
