Mel Gibson’s rarely-seen NINE children – including four that have followed his Hollywood footsteps – as the star splits from his girlfriend of nine years Rosalind Ross

Mel Gibson’s split from his partner Rosalind Ross came as a surprise to many fans, with the pair sharing the end of their relationship in a joint statement on Tuesday.

While best known for his acting roles, the Hollywood star’s vast family has also drawn attention, with the Braveheart director the proud father of nine children with three different partners.

Mel welcomed seven of his children, Hannah, 45, Edward, 43, Christian, 43, William, 40, Louis, 37, Milo, 35, and Thomas, 26, with his wife of 29 years, Robyn Moore, before she filed for divorce in 2009.

After separating from Moore, Mel began dating Russian songwriter and pianist Oksana Grigorieva, and they welcomed their daughter Lucia in 2009. 

Following a lengthy custody battle, Mel began dating equestrian and screenwriter Rosalind in 2014, and three years later, they became proud parents to their son Lars.

Mel has predominantly kept his nine children out of the spotlight, but in September his two youngest children Lucia and Lars joined him on the red carpet for the premiere of his movie Monster Summer. 

In a statement this week, Mel and Rosalind revealed they had quietly split after nine years together. 

‘Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,’ they said.

Here’s a look at the Hacksaw Ridge star’s vast brood, as he adjusts to co-parenting with his ex Rosalind…

Hannah Mae Brobst, 45

Mel and Robyn welcomed their first daughter Hannah in 1980 back in Australia, although the actor wasn’t present for the birth as he was in Egypt filming Gallipoli.

Instead, Mel tuned into the birst of his first child over the phone, and since then Hannah has followed her father’s footsteps with a career in the film industry.

In 2000, Hannah worked as a production assistant on the set of her father’s movie The Patriot and as a makeup artist on his rom-com What Women Want.

In 2006, she married the Grammy-nominated blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, with the traditional ceremony  performed in Latin at Holy Family Catholic Church, which was built by her father, in Agoura Hills.

Hannah and Kenny now have six children, and on her Instagram bio she describes herself as a ‘mother, wife and hypnobirth educator.’

Christian Gibson, 43

Mel and Robyn’s twin sons, Christian and Edward, were born in Australia in 1982.

Christian went on to attend the University of Colorado, and he has worked on several TV series and movies as a camera operator, including his dad’s hits Hacksaw Ridge and Daddy’s Home 2.

According to his Instagram, Christian lives between L.A. and Mexico City and enjoys working outdoors.

More recently he’s worked on Netflix’s Spanish dark comedy Las Muertas, which translates to The Dead Girls. 

Edward Gibson, 43

Like his brother Christian, Edward was born in 1982 in Australia, but he opted against following his father into the film industry.

According to 90265 Magazine, Ed studied at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, where he majored in glass blowing. 

Edward’s business Natural Edge also sells art and furniture made from reclaimed wood slabs imported from Fiji, and he was inspired to start the interiors company after living for two years on a remote island.

William ‘Will’ Gibson, 40

Mel and Moore welcomed their son Will in 1985, but unlike some of his siblings, he’s predominantly kept himself out of the spotlight.

His younger brother Milo did share a sweet tribute on Instagram in honour of National Siblings Day in 2019.

He wrote in the caption: ‘Happy national sibling day. You have no idea how long this took me. Family is for life keep them close they are the ones that hopefully stick around.’

Louie Gibson, 37

Louie was born back in 1988, and he has taken inspiration from his dad by pursuing a career as a film director.

In 2011 he earned his film degree from Chapman University, and he’s since director horror films including Happy Hunting and Manifest West.

Louie married The Americans actress Annet Mahendru in 2016, and they also starred in his film Manifest West. They share one child together.

In November 2022, the couple spoke to The Bare Magazine about how they navigate having a healthy working relationship.

‘I’ve gotten to see Annet transform so many times over the years,’ he said. 

‘I would say we trusted each other. Which we already have in our personal life. I guess that carries over. I hope to work with Annet till the end of my road.’

Anna added: ‘There isn’t anyone else in the world who puts me at ease the way Lou does. On our first date we said we’d have 10 kids together – I think we meant kids and movies!’.

Milo Gibson, 35

Mel and Robyn welcomed their son Milo in 1990 in Australia, and originally it seemed he wasn’t interested in pursuing a film career.

After graduating from high school in Malibu, Milo worked as a massage therapist, and after working as an electrician, he made the surprise decision to become an actor.

Speaking about the career move, he told PEOPLE in 2017: ‘It’s very scary to make that change. But one day it hit me that I don’t want to turn 50 and regret not trying something I have a passion for.’

Milo worked alongside his father on his 2017 war epic Hacksaw Ridge, and was also directed by his brother Louie in the film Manifest West.

Speaking about working with his father, Milo said: ‘We had a lot of fun, but it was a professional relationship. It was amazing watching Mel direct; he’s pretty damn good at it.’

Thomas Gibson, 26

Thomas is the youngest of the seven children from Mel’s married to wife Robyn, and he was born in 1999.

When Mel and Robyn split he was just 10 years old, and following their divorce, he was mainly kept out of the spotlight

Lucia Gibson, 16

 

After his split from Robyn, Mel moved on to date Russian songwriter and pianist Oksana Grigorieva.

She announced her pregnancy just six weeks after Mel had filed for divorce, though the pair had been separated since 2006.

Lucia was born in 2009, but when her parents split the following year, she became caught in a bitter custody battle, which at one point became so severe they once held restraining orders against each other.

In 2014, a Los Angeles court granted the Mad Max star permission to spend a month with Lucia in his homeland during pre-production for Hacksaw Ridge.

It is understood that Oksana did not want their daughter to go and objected to her spending time overseas with her father.

Sources also told TMZ that another part of their disagreement was over which kindergarten the little girl was going to.

However, at the hearing they are said to have told the judge they want to become better co-parents of their daughter.

Mel and Oksana split in 2010 after Mel admitted to a battery charge filed by his ex.

It was reported that Gibson initially offered his ex a settlement of $15 million, but she refused. 

In 2022, Grigorieva released a music video for her single ‘Lemonade’ which featured a glimpse at her daughter Lucia.

‘It relays the story of some challenging times in my past and the person who was there for me every step of the way, with her unconditional purity, devotion and love. That person is my daughter Lucy, an inspiration of my life,’ the singer wrote on Instagram.

Lucia then made a rare public appearance with her father in September 2024 when she joined him for the premiere of his film Monster Summer. 

Lars Gerard Gibson, eight

Mel became a father for the ninth time when his then-partner Rosalind welcomed a son named Lars in 2017. 

‘They’re thrilled and Lars is adorable,’ a source told PEOPLE.

The pair had previously shared in September 2016 they were expecting their first child together.

‘Mel and Rose are so excited about the baby,’ a friend close to the couple told PEOPLE at the time. 

‘Mel loves being a dad and he and Rose can’t wait to be parents together. The last two years have been some of his happiest years he’s ever had.’

In December, Mel and Rosalind revealed they were going their separate ways, sharing the end of their relationship in a social media statement.
