Megan Barton Hanson has recalled how a six-month period in 2019 was ‘the worst part of my life’ after her younger brother had ‘a mental breakdown’.
The Love Island star opened up to her friend, Celebs Go Dating relationship expert Paul Carrick Brunson on his We Need To Talk podcast, revealing how her brother Kurtis’ health issues and her turbulent relationship with co-star Wes Nelson led to months of ‘hell’.
In 2019, a year after she shot to fame on Love Island, Megan’s brother Kurtis admitted possession of a lock knife, possession of cocaine and cannabis, criminal damage and drug driving.
Megan soared to fame on season five of Love Island, finishing in fourth place with Wes.
But the couple split five months after the show ended, with Megan later claiming Wes prioritised money and career over her.
Speaking about that period in her life to Paul, Megan broke down in tears as she explained how Kurtis ‘had a mental breakdown’, adding: ‘That was hell.’

‘Wes cheated on me and I was just like, “Oh my God”. It was just a lot. And that six months was just mental. I thought, “Christ, I only wanted a few more OnlyFans followers.”
‘Why has this gone so bad?’
Earlier this year, Megan spoke exclusively to the Mail’s comedy podcast Straight to the Comments! where she detailed her relationship with Wes now.
Megan revealed: ‘Yeah, we’re like civil, we’re friends. If I saw him [Wes] out, I’d chat to him.’
Megan – who came out as bisexual in 2019 – detailed the difference between her romantic relationships with women and men.
She explained: ‘I try not to look at gender. I think for me it’s more about the connection I have with someone.
If they’re bringing something to my life, they’re making me a better version of myself, and they’re just a nice person.’
Reflecting on her past romances she added: ‘I’ve dated so many a***holes.

Her last known relationship was with TOWIE’s Demi Sims, who she split from in 2023, four years after meeting on Celebs Go Dating. Megan said she initiated the split because she ‘wasn’t ready’
‘I’m just open; if they’re a girl, a guy, it doesn’t matter to me.’
While Megan is believed to be single, she sparked dating rumours in September when she was seen kissing Instagram model Leah Ray.
Her last known relationship was with TOWIE star Demi Sims, who she split from in 2023, four years after meeting on Celebs Go Dating.
Megan told Paul that she initiated the split from Demi because she ‘wasn’t ready’ and hadn’t addressed her feelings for Wes, admitting ‘my mind was just scrambled’.
Elsewhere in the We Need To Talk podcast, the reality star revealed her horrifying ordeal at the hands of an abusive ex, saying she fell pregnant after he removed his condom without her consent, an illegal practise known as stealthing.
Megan revealed they had opted to terminate the pregnancy but her ex fell into a violent rage on their way home from the procedure.
Speaking about that period in her life to Paul, Megan broke down in tears as she explained how Kurtis ‘had a mental breakdown, adding ‘That was hell.’
She recalled: ‘He was like, “You’re disgusting. You just killed our baby.”
Then he’s like, “You make me sick”, then he got the seat belt, wrapped it around my neck, bit my nose – this was post nose job – and said, “Think you’re pretty with that new nose?”.
‘Bit it, started filming me and goes, “Cry, b***h. Go and tell the camera what you’ve just done”. I was in so much shock, I couldn’t even have tears. I couldn’t breathe.’
Megan said she was then given ’10 seconds to run’ to safety as her ex threatened to kill her.
