Mean Girls musical maintains top spot at box office with $11.7 million, but experiences a significant 60% decline in second week as top 6 rankings remain unaltered

The box office has suffered its first weak weekend of 2024, with the top 6 movies remaining the same from last weekend.

Paramount Pictures’ Mean Girls movie musical repeated atop the box office with $11.7 million, despite dropping a whopping 59.1% in its second weekend.

It debuted atop the box office on Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend with $28.6 million for the three-day and $33.6 million for the four-day tally.

It even added 35 more theaters to bring its tally to 3,826, though it only earned a dismal $3,058 per-screen average.

The musical adaptation of the Broadway play – which was adapted from director Mark Waters’ beloved 2004 film comedy – has earned just over $50 million at the domestic box office.

The new Jason Statham action-thriller The Beekeeper held fast in second place with $8.4 million.

It only dropped a decent 48.8% from its debut weekend, where it took in $16.5 million and fell short of taking down Mean Girls.

It has currently taken in $31.1 million domestic and $44.2 million from foreign markets for a decent $75.3 million worldwideth the movie made from a modest $34 million budget, the film is likely in line to turn a profit once its theatrical run has ended.

Repeating in third place is Wonka, which took in $6.4 million, dropping just 23.9% from its previous weekend.

It dropped 210 theaters bringing its theater count to 3,136, though it only managed a $2,053 per-screen average.

Its domestic tally was raised to $187.1 million domestic, with the musical likely to top $200 million once its theatrical run has ended.

Wonka has also taken in $344.6 million from foreign markets bringing its worldwide tally to $531.7 million. 

The top 5 is rounded out by Anyone But You (5.4M, $64.2M domestic) and Migration ($5.3M, $94.6M domestic),

The top 10 is rounded out by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ($3.6M, $114.1M domestic), the weekend’s sole newcomer I.S.S. ($3,02M), Night Swim ($2.7M, $23.7M domestic), The Boys in the Boat ($2.5M, $43.8M domestic) and Poor Things ($2M, $20.3M domestic).

Next weekend brings Snoop Dogg’s The Underdoggs and Totem in wide release to close out the month of January.
