Matty Healy baffled fans as The 1975 claimed the star was eating a phone on stage during their performance in Chicago on Monday.
Unphased, his mother, Denise Welch, 65, joked about the singer’s shocking act on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Matty, 34, was captured on the edge of the stage as he appeared to bite chunks out of a light blue phone.
But upon close inspection, Matty was not consuming the electronic device – only a sweet treat disguised as a mobile.
The disguise consisted of a pale blue fondant wrapped around a thin chocolate sponge with a creamy white filling.

The 1975 posted a picture of the star on X with the caption: ‘Matty Healy is eating a phone. Yes.’
While racking up more than 620,000 views, fans were quick to point out that the clever stunt was, in fact, just a chocolate treat.
One fan wrote: ‘The show is so weird tonight. At least it’s not raw steak. Looks like a Pop Tart.’
Another penned: ‘The inside looks like cookies and crème, and the outside looks like some kind of fondant icing which was then painted with edible paint to mimic the look of an iPhone.’
But Loose Women star Denise, seemed to enjoy going along with the joke as she retweeted the post with the caption: ‘Hope he didn’t leave any. He wasn’t brought up that way’.
The band are currently on tour in America and set to take center stage in the UK in February 2024.
It comes just weeks after Matty made another public apology for his controversial behaviour after he was slammed for making racist and misogynistic remarks.
Earlier this year, The 1975 frontman sparked controversy when questionable comments resurfaced in the wake of him dating Taylor Swift.

Amongst his shocking comments was that he enjoyed masturbating to videos of women ‘being brutalised’ and racist impressions of the rapper Ice Spice.
The singer has been addressing his comments on recent tours.
During his band’s concert at the Hollywood Bow, Matty – who recently announced his band is going on an ‘indefinite hiatus’ – apologised again as he revealed he had been attempting to play into the character of a ’21st century rock star.’
He told the crowd: ‘Because some of my actions have hurt some people, I apologize to those people, and I pledge to do better moving forward.
‘I think it’s also important that I express my intentions, so everybody knows that there is no ill will coming from me. You see, as an artist, I want to create an environment for myself to perform where not everything that I do is taken literally…
‘I’ve kind of performed exaggerated versions of myself on other stages, be it print or on podcasts and in an often misguided attempt at fulfilling the kind of character role of the 21st century rock star – so, it’s complicated.
‘Sometimes playing pretend is the only way you can truly find out who you are, and you could probably also say that men would rather do offensive impressions for attention than go to therapy.’
