Matt Smith showers in suit for Variety shoot; reveals why he almost turned down Doctor Who role

Matt Smith looked incredible while posing for Variety Magazine’s June cover as he opened up about nearly turning down the role of the Time Lord in Doctor Who.

The House Of Dragons star, 41, put on a handsome display as he posed confidently in an array of suits for the glitzy shoot.

For one look, he kept it classic with a black two-piece and a crisp white shirt while for another he switched it up for a grey ensemble as he ran his hands through his hair under a shower.

He then cut a casual figure in a rugged brown leather jacket which he layered over a tight white T-shirt as he enjoyed a cup of tea.

During his playful photoshoot he was also spotted jumping on the bed and relaxing on a balcony.

While speaking to Variety for their cover shoot, Matt revealed that when he was offered the leading role in Doctor Who, he almost turned it down.

He told the publication: ‘Briefly. But my agent, very quickly, was like, “You’re doing it.” Thank God’.

Matt played the Eleventh Doctor from 2010 to 2013 alongside Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).

He began with an appearance at the conclusion of The End of Time, continuing from The Eleventh Hour to The Time of the Doctor.

He also appeared as the Doctor in the 2010 two-part storyline Death Of The Doctor for the Doctor Who spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures and in a cameo in the 2014 episode Deep Breath.

Matt has starred in many hit TV shows across his successful acting career including the Game Of Thrones spin off show The House Of Dragons.

The production of the new series was paused during  the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Matt and his co-stars are governed by the British union Equity—the members of which had no legal protections were they to join the strike in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA.

He told the publication: ‘There was a huge sense of conflict in us as performers and actors. We got together and discussed it in depth and made our feelings clear of what we’d like to do, but we didn’t have a great deal of choice. It was going to go on.’

The trailer for the second season was released just days before his cover photoshoot and it saw Matt return for what is certain to be another dramatic season.

The trailer saw Matt come back as Daemon Targaryen as the cast go to war over the Iron Throne.
