M*A*S*H legend Alan Alda is opening up about his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease—just after stealing scenes and laughs in Tina Fey’s new Netflix series The Four Seasons.
The iconic actor and comedian, 89, revealed he’s been doing everything he can to stay positive and ‘find the funny’ since being diagnosed in 2015.
‘It’s gone from a part-time job to almost a full-time job keeping track of all these little solutions,’ Alda told People. ‘But it keeps me always looking for the funny side.’
The father of three—who also lives with face blindness, or prosopagnosia, which makes it difficult to recognize people—said he’s constantly finding ways to adapt.
‘Almost every day I’m finding a new way to do something,’ he said. ‘It’s a little like a game. I’ve found whatever the little problem is, if I keep at it, I can eventually solve it—and then I feel like a million bucks.
‘It’s a way to have a good time under poor circumstances.’

Though Parkinson’s demands much of his time, Alda hasn’t let it sideline his passion for performing.
His recent cameo in The Four Seasons earned plenty of laughs, proving the Emmy winner hasn’t lost his comedic touch.
The Netflix series reimagines Alda’s 1981 film The Four Seasons, which chronicled the shifting dynamics between three couples over the course of a year.
Now adapted for television, the story has found fresh life—and a warm reception—with Tina Fey at the helm.
The show has already been renewed for a second season.
‘I’m so happy for Tina,’ saidAlda. ‘The movie meant a lot to me, and people are reacting to her work very much as they did to mine.’
In the original film, Alda portrayed Jack Burroughs, a tightly wound lawyer struggling with control issues.
In Fey’s version, Will Forte takes on a reimagined version of the character, while Alda returns in a new role—as one of the adult character’s dad.

In one standout scene with Fey and Colman Domingo, Alda delivers a dose of unexpected—and hilarious—marriage wisdom.
‘Every once in a while… [my wife would] say, “Congratulations! Take off your pants, it’s a sex day,”‘ his character said. ‘You might think of trying that with your spouse.’
Off-screen, Alda draws just as much insight from his own long-running love story with wife Arlene, his partner of 68 years.
‘She always says, “The secret to marriage is a short memory,”‘ he shared with People. ‘We both try to practice being there when we’re there: listening, answering, taking an interest.’

‘I don’t have dexterity with my fingers the way I used to, so sometimes she has to tear a package open for me,’ he added. ‘She’s so good-natured about it. I’m always saying, “Thank you.”‘
